Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Q1 2016 results: 940k 3DS & 220k WIIU shipped ( Net loss: 240M$)

Nintendo just posted their financial earnings for Q1 2016. Here are some of the highlights:

Total revenue: 620M$ ( -31% YoY)

Net loss: 240M$ (+80M$ last year)

Operating loss: 50M$ (+11M$ last year)

WIIU: 220K HW ( 470k last year)/ 4.7M (4.55M last year) SW

3DS: 940K HW (1.01M last year) / 8.5M (7.9M last year) SW

There were NO million sellers this quarter.

"During the three-month period ended June 30, 2016, for Nintendo 3DS, Kirby: Planet Robobot, which was released globally, showed steady sales. In the U.S., BRAVELY SECOND: END LAYER was released, and in Europe, Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright/Conquest was released and both titles got off to a good start. As a result, the worldwide sales of Nintendo 3DS hardware and software were 0.94 million (7% decrease on a year-on-year basis) and 8.47 million units (7% increase on a year-on-year basis) respectively.

With respect to Wii U, in addition to titles such as Star Fox Zero/Guard and Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, which were released globally, Splatoon and Super Mario Maker which were released during the prior fiscal year showed steady sales. The global sales of Wii U hardware and software were 0.22 million (53% decrease on a year-on-year basis) and 4.68 million units (3% increase on a year-on-year basis) respectively.

For amiibo, the figure-type and the card-type sales remained at approximately 1.70 million units and 1.30 million units respectively mainly due to a lack of new titles that are compatible with amiibo.

Download sales decreased year on year because sales of in-game downloadable content were down. In addition to these results, due to foreign exchange rates being impacted by significant yen appreciation, net sales were 61.9 billion yen (of which overseas sales were 44.8 billion yen or 72.3% of the total sales) and operating loss was 5.1 billion yen. As a result of exchange losses totaling 35.0 billion yen due to the appreciation of the yen, ordinary loss was 38.6 billion yen and loss attributable to owners of parent was 24.5 billion yen."

This is going to be a hard year.

Just make a fully fledged 3D "The Pokémon Adventure" with all ~750 Pokémon and 1 amiibo for each.

You'll never see a loss ever again XD

Of course the amiibo should be completely optional and just a fun way to store and take your favorite Pokémon with you when eg. visiting friends (digital data stored on the amiibo). I know I'd buy the game and at least 25 amiibo... all for my kids of course and myself

The exchange rate is hitting them hard.

It was pretty quiet quarter for them so I didn't expect much. Exchange rate is going to be hard to overcome for companies like Nintendo that get alot of sales from outside of Japan.
Anyways I expect the 3DS to still do well this year with Sun and Moon. Plus there is a rumored price cut coming for the 3DS as well so with those two then that could be pretty interesting to watch.

I'm not surprised. They haven't had a major release, so this is to be expected.

EDIT: That is to say, they didn't have a major seller

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

So 3DS was actually down YoY in americas and up YoY in Japan for shipments. Which is interesting, wonder how pokemon will change it.

Expected result because lack of major releases. Wanted to create thread when I first saw it but didn't crated because of generalization. Lol.

13.02 million Wii U's shipped @ 30 Jun 16. VGChartz has 13.14 million sold through. I think VGChartz has been over tracking Wii U the entire gen, you would think they would have corrected that by now. At least 3DS over tracking has been fixed.

Terrible quarter for Nintendo, wasn't expecting much but still sad to see how poor they are going currently.

NX can't come soon enough.
