Weaker than the 360? Can't a toaster have the ability be stronger than the 360 at this point? It has only been 11 years.

Great reasoning. As always, I love the chart which shows Nintendo's continual decline in the home console market, even though it doesn't.

Let's not kid ourselves here.  Without the Wii fluke, Nintendo has been declining in the home console market.  You can try to reason this however makes you feel better, but it's a cold, hard fact.  The core market has progressively moved on from Nintendo once the PS entered the scene.  They were able to gain a lot of casuals with the Wii, but now that mobile gaming has stolen them away, that model isn't going to work anymore.  The Wii U's, which is basically Wii 2.0 (underpowered, but cheap HW, that uses a gimmicky controller) lack of sales illustrates this extremely well.

The NX is basically Nintendo's last ditch effort to be relevant HW-wise.  They are trying to combine their home and console markets with one console.  The problem is, if the new rumors are true, than they have done it in the WORST way possible.  Many were speculating that NX would be a home console that fell somewhere around the XBO, powerwise.  May have been a little less or a little more powerful.  It would also have a controller that doubled as a handheld.  While I don't think it would have been successful, at all, it at least would have allowed them to have 3rd party support for a couple of years, until the PS5 came out and devs moved away from the PS4/Neo.

What we have now, again, if the rumors are true, is a gaming tablet with detachable controllers.  That means the power level will be even less than what was speculated before.  Maybe half an XBO.  3rd parties aren't going to want to take time to make AAA ports for an console that underpowered.  This is already being proven by the fact that the NX comes out in 7 months, yet we only have like 4 games announced for it.  And sure, it being weaker will mean it'll be cheaper, but its weaker HW and lack of 3rd party support for AAA, I don't see it having a very positive reception from core gamers.

Throw in a docking station, a bigger storage solution than 16gb flash memory, a "wii u pro" like controller.

And Id assume Nintendo should be able to sell such a console around 250$, atleast I hope thats the price they end up at.

PS4 & XB1 are going to be 299$ by the time the NX is out.

If its 1/3 the power, it cant cost the same or more than the PS4/XB1s.

Not if they want it to sell.

You can't put your PS4 in your back pack and play it on the train or a park bench, so that would be a huge differenitator.

You do remember that the 3DS was not selling when it was $249, right?  Nintendo HAD to do a firesale, which lost them quite a bit of money, dropping the price to $169 before it started to perform well.  In other words, a $249-$299 handheld WILL NOT SELL in a day when you can buy a decent tablet for $100-$150 and play pretty much anything you want from the Play Store.  The handheld market is dying.

Well this didn't take long. For all we know it could be another Wii phenomenon. Let's wait and see before making such assumptions.

3DS has sold more units then the PS4. Nintendo has been very sucessful in the handheld market unlike Sony.

This is Nintendos Nextgen handheld and a pretty powerful one at that. IT will have plenty of Japan support.

Also what Nintendo Handheld has had bad sales? i cant think of any. I mean Nintendo is launchin new hardware into a market they own. So i think they will be fine...

Seems like too many people are forgetting the history of 3DS, and the state of the HH market.  It also started out very poorly when it was priced at $249.  They had to drop it to $169, which lost them quite a bit of money, for it to actually start performing well.  Even after that, the 3DS will still be their poorest selling HH.  It will most likely sell 65M-75M, less than the PSP sold, which had the highly successful DS to compete with.  The HH market is dying/dead.

So, do you honestly think a NX that is less powerful than a XBO, and most likely priced at $299 will see a better start than the $249 3DS?  Highly doubt it.  And I don't think Nintendo is going to be able to drop it to $169 if sales are stagnant.

Also, a console that launched 2 1/2 years earlier has sold more?  Shocker.  Hope you'll be less shocked when the PS4 easily passes it, and then some.

Lets not kid ourselfs here. No 100-150 handheld will have graphics or games that can be compared to a Nintendo NX.

Also going by your way of thinking. why buy a console at all when you can buy a $100-150 pc that can play pretty much all games on steam in some way or another?

It doesn't have to have better graphics.  We're talking about casuals here.  Ones that are fine playing Pokemon Go, or other mobile games, on their phones and tablets, not caring about rushing out to buy a 3DS or NX.

And HH and home consoles are completely different markets.  Hence why one is dying as casuals leave, but the other is still doing perfectly fine with core gamers staying.  And those core gamers aren't really going to care about a HH that can be plugged into their TV.  Especially when that console is much less powerful than the one they have now and priced at $299.

I'm not disagreeing, but Nintendo is stuck in a bad place. They don't really have the audience or resources to succeed in the core home console gaming market. Not with Sony and MS willing to spend billions. MS especially, X1 is dirt cheap for those level of specs.

The handheld consoles market is down, but 3DS is still doing pretty damn well and moves a lot of software. So naturally Nintendo wants to continue with that, especially since there isn't a significant competitor there vying for avid gamers.

I was not looking forward to another generation of Nintendo home and portable consoles. But if Nintendo is going to put their sole focus on hybrid home console/portable device, that excites me in a way other consoles don't and I will definitely buy one. I would hope Nintendo can keep the price around $250 though. If it has the same specs as the Nvidia Shield TV, then $250 is possible.

The Wii was their lucky break. The Wii U is just continuing the trend.

The Wii U wasn't a trend, just a bad move.

I've said it a million times and I'll say it again, Wii U should have stuck with the Wiimote. It would probably be under $200 (right now) if it did and the userbase would be bigger.

The Wiimote was a unique way to play games and they threw it away. That was such a huge blunder.

The only officially confirmed aspect of the NX is that the new Zelda will be on it, correct? Is there a competition over who can jump the gun the hardest?

I wish Nintendo would just drop some details, anything really, so NX discussions could have a modicum of substance. Instead we're left with empty rumors (oh, but rumors from Eurogamer, so they must be worth at least two grains of salt, yeah?).
