Forums - Gaming Discussion - Eurogamer: Nintendo NX is a portable console with detachable controllers (It also connects to your TV, and runs cartridges)

I know the 3DS has online but most people dont play online 3ds games on the go when their connection isnt very stable but might meet up with a friend to trade or battle. Pokemon fans have showed that they are interested in Pokemon HD and playing it on homeconsoles just look at how well pokken has done. Pokemon fans are interested in HD pokemon on a home console its just that the Pokemon company hasnt delivered.

It would still be hard for the NX to sell 40 million if it was a new home console and came in this late in the generation. Those that are still looking for a home console would  see the ps4/xb1 more appealing because of the third party support is pretty much guaranteed compared to them buying the NX with the risk of it losing third parties like the Wii u.  I agree that Nintendo should have just rode the next two years and released a new console but it seems like they are not doing that so by having a hybrid console isnt bad.

For those that want a home console experience Nintendo consoles arent the place to go anymore unless your a hardcore fan. Nintendo seems to going after casuals and still pleassing their hardcore home console fans/handheld fans. This way is probably a lot easier to get that 40 million users than having a dedicated home console.

The 3DS's crappy online has nothing to do with it being a portable.  The Wii U also has crap online, as did the Wii.  There's no reason you need to make it a home console in order to make serviceable online games.  This is especially not an issue with Pokemon, which is a turn based game, where lag has no actual impact on the gameplay.  Pokken is a completely different genre of game, and is doing alright, but is not a huge success.  Pokken selling (maybe) a million copies doesn't mean that's what people want from the mainline games.  For comparison, Paper Mario: Sticker Star sold over 2 million copies, which doesn't mean that's the way fans want the series to go.

If you're arguing that third party support is a risk, then I don't know why you'd want them to go with an expensive format, and underpowered graphics.  This is basically a guarantee that third party support will be gone.  If they go with X86 architecture and power similar to the PS4, then there would be little reason to not support the NX.

This thing could sell 40 million units, but they could have sold 40 million with a straight up 3DS successor, which could have been far more optimized for a handheld.   The fact that it's a hybrid really wouldn't help matters at all.

You're being confusing, unless you're saying that this leak is false.

Well, you tell me how in the world they could append 2 quality controllers to the end of a portable device?

Grab your 3DS and add a controller to each end.  Now shove that in your pocket.   Does that sound like a good idea?

Nintendo did do that though ;)

Smartest thing Nintendo could do at this point IMO.

Sony/MS have monopolized the traditional console market and are oversaturating it with PS4 Neo and XB Scorpio, I always thought a hybrid would give Nintendo a shot at bringing something different to the table and build around their strength -- portable hardware, every portable Nintendo system has outsold its console counterpart since the SNES era.

This should get very good Japanese support at least, which the Wii U didn't, even the Wii was kinda iffy, provided it can handle XB1 ports (downscaled a bit).

Yh its the best they can do, though i would have expected them to instead make a powerful console that has offscreen portable support (eg remote play) instesd of a poeerful handheld that can be used as a console. Cause that limits how poeerful they can go on the console side of things.

And somwthing else, by this time next year, or in 2018.... The current PS4/XB1 will be getting what are arguably downscaled versions of the Neo/Scorpio games. So for said games to be on the NX we are looking at a downscale of the downscale?

They released a mock up.

If this is true, I get the references to casuals. Those things look like Wiimotes.

Its going to be marketed as a handheld because thats what Nintendo biggest market is versus Sony whose market is mainly home console.

Also this rumour states the home console is weaker than Xbone One. Even the Wii U was stronger than the PS3. This a handheld that can be played as a home console.

If it works like both, then is both.

That is true too. But I have a strong feeling this will be marketed as a strong handheld that can play as a home console that is stronger than Wii U. As a result, this will allow it to have handheld and home console Nintendo teams to fill out the library. But having this addition will make the handheld price rise which is a big concern since 3DS and Vita $250-300 price launch. Nintendo's historically low console sales also inspire low confidence about how attractive home console Nintendo games will be to handheld owners to raise the handheld price. And a home console in 2017 that is weaker than Xbox One isn't very attractive either. Fortunately this is just a rumour for now, though and if this is true maybe Nintendo has amazing gimmick that justifies the price like Wii or DS. But with none, this hybrid doesn't seem able to surpass even 3DS and Wii U LTD sales.

A portable console that can be hooked to the TV? YES!

Hopefully its true.

Indeed. Sony came oh so close until they forgot to put the HDMI output on the Vita. Fingers crossed this turns out to be true. There is certainly the grunt in mobile hardware now as the Vita was already pretty close to where it needs to be over 4 years ago.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Ahhhhhh thanks for this it makes a lot more sense. Just needed help visualizing it.

#1 Amb-ass-ador

...... need pricing info......

I predict that the Wii U will sell a total of 18 million units in its lifetime.

The NX will be a 900p machine

Ah, thank you. I was hurting my brain trying to picture how this is supposed to work.
