Forums - Politics Discussion - France church attack: Priest killed in hostage taking near Rouen

A priest has been killed in an attack by two armed men at his church near Rouen in northern France, police and French media have said.

The armed men entered the church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray during mass, taking the priest, two nuns and several churchgoers hostage, reports said.

French TV said shots had been heard after police arrived at the scene. Both hostage-takers are now dead.

The area has been cordoned off and police have told people to stay away.

At least one person is receiving medical treatment for injuries.

There was no immediate indication of the identity or motive of the hostage-takers, but France has been on high alert since the Bastille Day attack in Nice earlier this month, when an attacker ploughed a lorry into celebrating crowds, killing more than 80 people.

The BBC's Lucy Williamson in Paris says the French government has been under huge pressure to prevent further attacks.

President Francois Hollande and Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve are on their way to Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray to be briefed by police.

Ok, is this becoming a routine? Everyday a new attack? Or is the media just reporting every single incident happening nowadays? Because, there's way more stuff going on then you can actually keep track on.

Well they always report every single incident but stuff like this is more serious than what normally happens accross West Europe atleast. The fact that the president goes their means that it is more serious than what normally happens in French. Normally you have on a weekly basis just a burglar who kills someone or a man/women who kills her own family, but taking hostages and killing a priest are very rare (normally).

But to me it looks more of a clickbait article, because of the recent france attacks. The media wants to make as much money as they possibly can with the death of people.

Show some cute kittens for example.

The only places with terrorist attacks are France, Germany and Belgium, wich are the countries people from outside think about when they think of Europe, what a coincidence (or not). The rest of Europe is not really having troubles with that right now.

Well,

but at least for Germany it's rather not a big issue in comparision to France and Belgium. So far, Germany had only minor attacks with no deaths except that one in 2011 and that one in munich 1972.

It's obviously more likely to die in an accident.

Actually, it's not even worth mentioning, but the media makes a huge deal of it.

The only terror which is being done in the countries is not by the terrorists, but by the media itself.

No I disagree, Clickbait articles are the ones like 'Muslim men beat his wife she passed away in the hospital'. Most media would not state the muslim part if it has nothing to do with religion. While sites that live from clicks will put the muslim part in it.  In Belgium atleast this news about France would always be covered in the media especially taking hostages and killing one of them + police shooting someone dead is very rare. In France on a yearly basis their are normally 10-15 criminals killed by the police and almost every one of them would be news. This is not just police killing some criminals.
