Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Donkey Kong Country 3 is sadly underappreciated (In my opinion)

Actually it's my favorite! I loved Kiddy, the bosses are great, the graphics are the best. And the gba version has more levels and different music. It's like a different game.

I kind of understand why the third of the SNES DKC trilogy gets overlooked; it released after the arrival of the N64 and was overshadowed by the 3D revolution, and as the third series entry the wow factor had diminished somewhat.

Still though, I think it deserves more credit than it gets. It may not have been a game-changer like DKC1 or a masterpiece like DKC2, but it's still an extremely well made platformer. Its levels have immense variety, with almost every stage introducing either a new mechanic or a clever twist on an existing one, and in keeping with its forebears, its controls are tight and its audiovisual presentation is fabulous.

More than almost any other game I can think of, DKC3 is a real victim of its circumstances, largely forgotten because it happened to release in the midst of bigger and more notable events in gaming history, and during a sharp swing away from 2D. Had it arrived even a year earlier, I think it would be remembered much more positively.

Am I alone in this, or does anyone else think it's unfairly overlooked?

It's my favourite one.

Yes, it's my favorite in the franchise.

Well, I love pretty much the entire Donkey Kong Country series (except Returns) but I've played and enjoyed DKC3 a lot more than the previous.

yeah!

God bless You.

I bought the trilogy on Wii VC. I loved 1 and 2. But 3 was a mess of generic platforming, terrible music, and incohesive design. Of course the graphics improved a considerable amount but imo, that's all it had going for it. And I really didn't like Chunky Kong or Baby Kong, whatever you call it.

It's OST certainly isn't as great as the first two games, but terrible?

I love DKC3 music. One of my favourite soundtracks from SNEs era.

I love DKC 3 and I don't understand why the critics towards its soundtrack, Treetop Trumble and Nuts N' Bolts are fantastic! Of course DKC 2 is not only the best DKC out there but the best video game ever (IMHO) so in that point I understand why the third part is not that appreciated...

DKC2 is my least favourite in the series I've got to admit..

God bless You.

Oh I agree DKC2 is better, I just feel DKC3 is still a very good game in its own right. :P

I agree with you. There are 6 things I liked a lot about DKC3:

1) This

2) The varied environments.

3) The vehicles.

4) The bears and the different items you had to collect and give to each of them.

5) The secret ending with the banana birds.

6) The terryfing bosses. This thing... creepiest thing ever.

It had a lot of strenghts. I enjoyed it as much as you did.

And there's the secret world that is super hard.

God bless You.

I actually think DKC3 is superior to DKC1...

Agreed. DKC1 is much more iconic and has a better soundtrack, but I actually think DKC3 is slightly better overall due to more interesting and varied level design.

You're not wrong.

I totally agree. In fact I'd argue it's the best of the series. I love the adventure game elements: side-quests, secret areas, NPCs. It almost feels like part platformer, part action-adventure game - something I really appreciate. In that way I think it predicted Rare's evolution with Banjo, Donkey Kong, and Conker.

Good point, I hadn't thought of it that way.
