Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Donkey Kong Country 3 is sadly underappreciated (In my opinion)

I bought the trilogy on Wii VC. I loved 1 and 2. But 3 was a mess of generic platforming, terrible music, and incohesive design. Of course the graphics improved a considerable amount but imo, that's all it had going for it. And I really didn't like Chunky Kong or Baby Kong, whatever you call it.

It's OST certainly isn't as great as the first two games, but terrible?

Yeah, i fully agree with you.I personally think its the best of the three. It has better presentation, the gameplay is the most refined, ans while in the sound department it does lose to DKC 2, it compensates for an overworld and having alot of secrets.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

I mean, all SNES games are subject to muffle, but the muffle on these tunes wasn't appreciated. And most of the tunes sounded well...generic. Easily, the first 2 games I would find myself humming to the melodies. I guess the melodies themselves weren't anywhere near as catchy as the first 2. They were more environmental, which isn't bad if that's what you're going for but it didn't do justice to 1 and 2. Especially DKC2's Ice Cave music I mean...

And oh God...

But I can respect how you feel about the game. It isn't a bad game by any means, it just didn't live up to the first 2 imo. It was very generic on all fronts and showed its age by the 3rd installation.

DKC3's score is certainly no match for DKC1 or 2, I agree, but I still think it's above average as video game melodies go. This is basically what I meant in the OP; that DKC3 suffers from living in the shadow of its predecessors.

I disagree. I was 14 when the first game launched and thought it was the greatest thing my eyes had ever seen. DKC2 was good as well, though a little too steep on the difficulty side (actually requiring you to PAY to save is bullshit, no excuses). I never got to the third game because I moved on to the PS1/N64/Saturn era but I just recently bought it on Ebay and played through the thing. The music is ASS... period. Harsh, yes, I know... but it's true. David Wise barely composed for it and some levels were just flat out awful sonically. The sound effects were lacking as well. The gameplay was also way too easy and I felt it was just boring overall compared to the first two.

This isn't to say it's a bad game. I just think it's bad compared to the first two which were damn near masterpieces of 2D gaming.

I think it gets just the right amount of love. It's a similar situation to Metroid Prime 2: it's a great game but considered the weakest in the series.

Mainly cause of that brat monkey.

"You should be banned. Youre clearly flaming the president and even his brother who you know nothing about. Dont be such a partisan hack"

I disliked DKC 3, because of stupid baby Kong thing. There I admitted.

I love DKC 3 and I don't understand why the critics towards its soundtrack, Treetop Trumble and Nuts N' Bolts are fantastic! Of course DKC 2 is not only the best DKC out there but the best video game ever (IMHO) so in that point I understand why the third part is not that appreciated...

Dammit, new I was forgetting something! Awesome track.

I mean, I don't really care that it's under appreciated, but it definitely is under appreciated.
