Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Rumour - NX sounds "expensive" + More info coming soon

Soundwave said:

If it's a hybrid console that can be taken outside the house and has specs around an XBox One ... that might do OK depending on certain things.

Another home console that sits under the TV isn't needed by the market, there's going to be 4 consoles that already do that (XB1, PS4, PS4 Neo, XB Scorpio).

Nintendo probably needs to do something different, another "regular" console from Nintendo won't work at this stage, they need something different, a portable that can function as a home console would be different and would probably have good sales in Japan at least.

Good sales in Japan means good Japanese support at least.

Who really wants to spend $500-$600 on Nintendo hardware anyway ... that's not cheap ($300 for Wii U + $200 for 3DS XL, even more if you bought both at launch). Just make one system, and allow a supplemental home dock that can produce higher range graphics for the home.

But not sure if Emily's sources are good, but that's what she seems to be hinting at (the "form factor" sounds expensive).

Home only consoles simply aren't Nintendo's strength market wise. Portables always do better, if the primary NX model is a portable, they have a better chance for market success even with mobile's rise, the ability to be used as a home console would also add dimension to Nintendo's portables to differniate them from mobile devices.

Why dont you just count the Xbox S as well? People with PS4 and a PS4 Neo obviously wont play both. There will be Xbox whatever and there will be Playstation whatever. So there's gonna be two other consoles and how many usually have both the Xbox and PS? not that many.

I agree with the portable console approach if that's what Nintendo takes.

Even with 3DS ....

3DS = 20 million sold in Japan

Wii + Wii U + GameCube combined = approximately 17 million

The support a Nintendo machine that was actually a capable console style hardware but had the userbase of their portable side would result in a platform with a ton of Japanese support IMO.

3DS/DS did not get the support they should have because they were portable-only devices that can't run the higher end games, if Nintendo can bridge that gap some they would get a lot more Japanese support.

I still find her credible, although I remain somewhat of a sceptic. She's been proven right before, but a lot of her leaks have turned out to be false, which means we should take it all with a grain of salt.

If it's a hybrid and if it's expansive, like she said, this could mean that there will be a docking station to the handheld console so that you can play your games on the TV - or something to that effect, maybe a separate home console and a portable that comes bundled together or can be bought each on its own. In this scenario, it WOULD be quite expansive, and Emily WOULD be right.

What does "expensive" mean anyway? What makes something expensive? Besides; perceived value is where it's at.

^ this.

Expensive is kinda okay... if you can atleast see where the money went.

That means you cant spend 100$ on the controller for the system (a gamepad),

if you plan on selling the system for 300$ (1/3 of the systems cost on a controller is too much).

I hope it doesnt turn out to be expensive. I dont think nintendo need to aim for more power than the normal PS4.

They just need it to be cheap and have a good software lineup.

Lim Robertson is backing up Emily Rogers claim that leaks about the NX form factor is about to leak:

This Emily Rogers type has been talking a lot. First she said it's a lot closer to Xbone than PS4, now she saying it sounds expensive which it can't be with that hardware, unless it was bundled with yet again another gimmick.

Nintendo NX is a portable console with detachable controllers

It also connects to your TV, and runs cartridges.

"Nintendo's upcoming NX will be a portable, handheld console with detachable controllers, a number of sources have confirmed to Eurogamer.

On the move, NX will function as a high-powered handheld console with its own display. So far so normal - but here's the twist: we've heard the screen is bookended by two controller sections on either side, which can be attached or detached as required.

Then, when you get home, the system can connect to your TV for gaming on the big screen.

A base unit, or dock station, is used to connect the brain of the NX - within the controller - to display on your TV.

For more on the console's power, Digital Foundry has a deep-dive look at the chip Nintendo has chosen as the centrepiece of NX, according to numerous well-placed sources: Nvidia's powerful Tegra mobile processor.

NX will use game cartridges as its choice of physical media, multiple sources have also told us."

EDIT: "
Due to the radical change in hardware design and internal technology, we've been told by one source that there are no plans for backwards compatibility."

Great. Nintendo will again ask people to rebuy their older games when they finally port them to that system. How many times have they asked their fans to buy a Super Mario or Zelda games yet again over the course of their history? -___-
It's more than due time that console makers embrace the way Steam is doing things. You buy a license for a game, and it can run on any future PC you buy. Instead of making you buy the games for every single piece of hardware you get down the line, or keep 27 systems, scattered everywhere in your home... Oh well. We'll see how they handle that. But I am keeping my Wii U for retro gaming, that's for sure.

Well Emily did deliver. Shes is still a credible.

Yup, delivered.
