Forums - Sales Discussion - Is the Xbox One dying faster than the 3DS? Is XOne overtracked?

the 3DS is selling fairly well actually, not sure all of the negativity around it. Its actually getting kind of old at this point for a hanhdled (what are we at, 5 years?) and its generally still outselling the Xone despite the Xone being much newer. and like you point out, the Xone being lowered under 300$ actually begins to put it in a muchhhh closer pricepoint to the 3DS, considering default 3DS's are close to like 200$ and special edition versions (which are constantly coming out and bought a lot) can go even higher

The Xone is not doing well. Its doing great in USA but terrible elsewhere. I would be shocked if it ever catches the 3DS, and that's even after considering the NX will be coming out next year and killing the 3DS's momentum. I just recognize that when Pokemon comes out this holiday season the 3DS is probably going to be selling like DOUBLE the hardware as the Xone for a few months.

Unless the updated Xone is some sort of miracle system with amazing specs I don't see it being able to stay in contention with the PS4 and I wouldn't be surprised if the Nintendo NX pops up and takes all of the attention for the 'second system' spot away from Microsoft and further pushes it down

I seriously don't know, but from what I'm told, the 3DS is doing piss-poor, while the X1 is perfectly fine. I don't know why and I don't care anymore. Whatever, I'm gonna play some 3DS now. Just got Nintendo Pocket Football Club and that game is addicting as hell! I don't even know why I can't stop playing, it's just the same over and over again and I can't even find good combinations with the training cards. Man, I suck at this game... oh, sorry, I'm kinda missing the topic here! =D

I think the numbers are a bit off on here and the 3DS may already be well over 60 million sold. Considering it'll probably end up at a lifetime of like 70-80 million- that's not poor at all, even when comparing with the majority of handhelds from the past.

The Xone on the other hand is struggling to outsell the 3DS currently, despite the 3DS being a few years older. the only thing that will even make this competition close is Nintendo releasing a successor (the NX) which will hurt 3DS sales.

THe only people who claim that the 3DS is not doing well are those who have unrealistic expectations for the DS standard to continue. Guess what, no system will probably sell 150 million hardware or whatever again. That's not the 'norm'

Comparing their sales if you align them from when they were launched, the story looks like this:

And I'm only doing their first 2 full years, since the Xbox One is still only 3/4ths into it's 3rd year.

Nintendo 3DS

Year 1 sales - Feb. 26, 2011 - Feb. 25, 2012 - 14,361,871 -
Year 2 sales - Feb. 26, 2012 - Feb. 23, 2013 - 27,693,898 -

Notable releases/events - (Launch of the Nintendo 3DS XL, Super Mario 3D Land, New Super Mario Bros. 2, Mario Kart 7, Paper Mario: Sticker Star, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and Fire Emblem: Awakening. (the last 2 were only released in Japan by the end of Year 2.))

Xbox One

Year 1 sales - Nov. 23, 2013 - Nov. 22, 2014 - 7,768,163 -
Year 2 sales - Nov. 23, 2013 - Nov. 21, 2015 - 16,074,006 -

Notable releases/events - (Launch in China, Halo 5: Guardians, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Forza Horizon 2, Forza Motorsport 5 & 6, some big 3rd party releases such as the COD series, Grand Theft Auto 5, FIFA, NBA 2K, Assassin's Creed, etc.

So for their first 2 years, the 3DS is ahead of the Xbox One, by a pretty comfortable margin I might add, but there is still A LOT that these 2 systems had left in the tank, or still have in the case of the Xbox One.
As it heads into it's 3rd complete year, the Xbox One is expecting to launch its slim model, the Xbox One S, later this year, along with Gears of War 4 and ReCore, and then there's Project Scorpio that's looming on the horizon as well! The system will also continue to get strong 3rd party support which will definitely help extend its life cycle a good year or two.
But on the 3DS' side of things, within its 3rd year it got its number 1 superstar title, its very own Pokemon game in the form of Pokemon X/Y, a few more notable games that launched in its 3rd year include, Luigi's Mansion 2, Tomodachi Life, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, Monster Hunter 4, the localizations of Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Fire Emblem: Awakening, Mario Party: Island Tour, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, finally, the 2DS launched in that year as well, and I'm also not sure about this, but I think development for the New Nintendo 3DS models started around this time period.
So it should definitely be interesting to see how this plays out!

Great analysis!

3DS and X1 both topping NPD in July is really interesting - but I think X1 had to work a lot harder to get there with the drastic price cuts on legacy X1 bundles.

While the  the trio X1 S bundles ought to give X1 a pretty big boost for August - the $150 N3DS bundled with Mario 3D Land could give it a real run for the money, especially if there's leftover momentum from Pokemon this month. If N3DS can match or beat X1's performance through the rest of this year, I think this thread gets interesting.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Don't you understand that the 3ds is doing poorly because it is a handheld and not a console, handhelds are expected to sell 150million units, non of which matter in terms of comparison to a console because it's not a real console anyway so those sales don't matter.

The X1 is doing great because it's a home console, and those are just darn fantastic, it might be slightly ahead of the previous gen right now even though no one would dare predict that it will outsell the X360 total sales by the end of the generation (unless every other MS console is called X1-S-Scorpio-Max Power-XP-Vista etc) But still those are home console sales and as such we must covet them as the fantastic completely more important than handheld sales that they are!

Now get out of here you, go and play that piece of handheld software you bought and don't even dare comparing the sales of that piece of gaming software to any beautiful home console software sales, because they are completely different, because I would like that very much, thank you.

I would agree this is off topic but I do wish you well enjoying your 3ds game! hope the joke fact of this post comes off alright and doesn't sound daft, sorry if it does, if it makes you upset or angry.... I hope I did not offend your home console! it's still great, don't worry.

Great thread with a lot of good information.

I think Xbox and 3DS are doing fine considering this months NPD.

Xbox is doing well and will not be going anywhere.

Now that we are rolling into the Neo, NX, and Scorpio releases it will be interesting to see how far each manufacturers numbers drop on current models.

The XBO is the best selling Xbox system when launches are alligned. The 3DS is shaping to be the worst selling Nintendo handheld.

Now, I don't think the XBO will outsell the 360 (it will sell much less in Europe, and don't even mention Japan), but it could outsell the 3DS, since the Chinese console market was just opened and the Western market is bigger than ever. Now, where is the 3DS doing badly? In the West. And it won't ever release in China.

Unfortunately for x1, the 360 saw a huge surge in the current upcoming launch aligned months. Not to mention the x1 saw numerous major price cuts very early on. To look at x1 and consider it a success based on its sales versus xbox 360 would be a rather glaring oversight.

remember, that at this point in time, xbox 360 was adding more and more expensive versions and growing in popularity with a very high attach rate. The same cannot be said about x1.

x1 is indeed dying. Price cuts don't increase sales, they just make later sales happen earlier.

Well. The latest NPD results has certainly made this thread more interesting!

It's doubtful, but outside the countries where there are official numbers its hard to tell. could be lower or higher.
Some on this site would definitely like it to be overtracked for sure lol, oblivious to the understanding that competition is a good thing.
