Forums - Movies & TV - Batman: The Killing Joke horrifyingly objectifies and victimizes Batgirl! SPOILERS!!!

What really bothers me about the movie is the fact that Batman and Batgirl had sex, that's wrong in so many ways

Is this a parody SJW post or is it for real?

embarrassed to watch the movie with your gf!? Is this Steve Shives' account?

not sure if you're aware of this but...

*** SPOILERS ***

Babs gets shot and becomes a paraplegic, thus literally being a VICTIM of the Joker.

*** END OF SPOILERS ***

Just a little heads up, maybe don't go read what happens to Jason Todd.

*spoilers* In the comics, Batman actually got her pregnant while she was going out with Robin........ although that was a book following up on Batman Beyond, so I don't know if it's canon. Probably not since the entire DC continuity has changed 3 or 4 times since then.

On topic though, I don't think it was necessary to make their relationship sexual.  It's not like Batman really needed extra motivation to be pissed at the Joker.  I mean he would have probably gotten just as angry if Robin was shot and they weren't having... bad example.

You can add sex to a comic story in a way that adds to it (see Jessica Jones), but this doesn't seem like it was a well thought out decision.  Of course, I haven't seen the movie.

Sounds like it would kinda suck for Batgirl fans.

I don't think the complaint is that something bad happens to Batgirl. I think the complaint is that they took a pretty strong character and made her this unstable damsel.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

It's supposed to be brutal and mature. If you want something PC and safe, there are plenty of cartoons that stay in G territory.

You know, there are ways to be "brutal" and "mature" without straight up being disrespectful to a character. Under The Red Hood, or Robin Vs Teen Titans would be two fantastic examples.

You're saying that the Joker wasn't respectful enough toward Batgirl?

I haven't seen the movie yet, I'm sure I will, but 1st of all, she's not supposed to be strong at that point. She was a young girl with a young girl crush on Batman who tried to imitate him the best she could. I would say that it's not until she becomes Oracle that she matures and actually becomes an actual asset to the bat family. Despite what happened to her, she manages to keep Batman on the "good" side, believing in justice, not in revenge.

There's nothing wrong with showing her in adversity and facing her own frailty. Only overcoming her limitations she managed to actually become a real hero.

Maybe, but they're not that effective.  George RR Martin for instance has plenty of characters in Game of Thrones that get disrespected  in some rather embarrassing AND brutal ways, and its effective because that's exactly what happens in real life; everybody is vulnerable too.  This technique wouldn't be effective if they only happened to minor characters.

I'm definitely saying that if this is what you think, you haven't seen the movie.

You nailed it in that last paragraph, their relationship in the movie not only is wrong but it doesn't add anything relevant to the story. Honestly it's just a bad attempt to give Batgirl some background and character developement.
