Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Journey Vs the Destination: Ever Play a Game Where the Destination Was Not Worth It?

Have you ever had a game you played that you really enjoyed, but then you reached the end... and felt so angered at it? (Heck, I have a book or 2 I can say about this as well) Like the it was not very satisfying, like the whole journey was pointless, like... it was all not worth it. I'm sure everyone's had that moment where the stared at the screen as the credits roll down, contemplate on the journey... and just feel disappointment.

I have a few stories on this myself (which is why I'm making a thread about it), and it's NOOOOT Super Mario Bros 2. I actually like that game, and the journey was still plenty fun. No, it's actually an old game I played many years ago, a sequel to a game people highly praised before, called Disgaea. I heard about a sequel coming and I decided to try it out, hearing about the praise of the 1st. And so, I played it, enjoying it overall. But then, the end came. I beat the game, and then came the ending. Now, I don't recall much of it. There was probably more to it, but all I remember from it, was this...:

Okay, cool... So the main hero and heroine fell in love I guess. I don't know why either. I remember her being an annoying b*tch and the hero was some muscle brain puncher. But continuing on, after you finish the final battle, you get a small cutscene and this picture, and then.... credits. That was it. Sure, there was a joke scene afterwards, with some closing statements on the status of a few other characters, but that was all for the ending. And I just felt very disappointed, so much so I ended up hating the game and somewhat stains my image on the series as a whole. Let's just forget the point of the journey, like... saving his family who turned into monsters and beating the demon lord up. Hmm, thinking on it now, I guess those all did happen. I guess the story was simple enough where the end was just the same.

So, does everyone one else have stories of their own? While writing this, I remember another game where I shared the same feelings: The end of The Last of Us. I won't mention it since some people still haven't played it, but that end was something I wished I hadn't left the safety of the city. Well, at least Joel ended up in a possibly better place.

You know, RAGE was actually a pretty good game. There was a lot of foundation built. It was showing you this Mad Max world and the game-play was nice. Then it ... just kind of ended. Like, where you look around and go, "what was that?" Following that, of course, was the classic "but the journey has only begun" hook. So very, very underwhelming, especially when you had Borderlands out, which was similar but much longer and much better.

Dude stop reading my mind! Came here to talk about that very game.

And yeah, Rage is actually a quite decent game but the ending feels like they pull the rug out from underneath you when you aren't really expecting it to be over yet.

Definitely don't regret playing it, definitely don't have any bad feelings about it, and I'd still be interested in Rage 2.... But yeah.

I would certainly play a Rage 2, with the hope of improvements, but it doesn't look likely.  It was obviously supposed to be a franchise but I guess sales and public reception killed it.  Looks like id is done with new IP.
