Forums - Gaming Discussion - Building a man cave - Gaming TV advice needed!

Hello VGC,

very simple question. I am building a new house and I will get my own Gaming-Room. Problem is that I don't have the gaming equipment ready yet. So, I need a new TV.

I was told that OLED is the best technology for gaming right now and what I saw was pretty impressive.

Which technology (LCD, LED, OLED or something else) do you prefer for gaming? And do you have a kickass TV in mind already?

I am currently looking at the LG 55 EG 9609. This beast is still 2,800€, which is quite a hefty price tag. But in February 2017 or so it should be significantly cheaper.

Here it is:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00RVAGC86/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469338746&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=LG+55+EG+9600

It is ridiculous how much cheaper it is in the US.

What's important for me is: 4K, at least 55", Great for gaming. Let's here your suggestions.

Thank You!

OLED looks the best. I have a 60", which is gorgeous. Mario Kart 8 with buddies is much more enjoyable with a bigger screen.

I don't know why that TV is so expensive though- perhaps due to the curve? Personally i don't think it's worth it. You can easily find a Samsung/LG smart TV that's 4k and 60" for low prices. My 60" TV was 900. Prices nowadays hover around 900-1300 for a good set. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung-60-class-60-diag--led-2160p-smart-4k-ultra-hd-tv-black/5155100.p?id=bb5155100&skuId=5155100&ref=212&loc=1&ksid=78e3af6f-aec3-4b96-8bea-661b1a87eb01&ksprof_id=16&ksaffcode=pg70061&ksdevice=c&gclid=CJvcope1i84CFQovaQodkLMEow

Also, I'd recommend getting a stand for the tv. Some are expensive, but those are typically hand made or neat looking. Modest ones can be bought for as low as 40 dollars: http://www.wayfair.com/Home-Loft-Concepts-TV-Stand-FOME1241-L6-K~FOME1241.html?refid=GX103455985123-FOME1241_14202427&device=c&ptid=155523267420&PiID%5B%5D=14202427&gclid=CMOEvNu0i84CFQumaQodLGUJag

As for the bottom, I'd recommend putting charging ports there. It's very convenient to have a place for all your controllers to charge up.

I'd take a picture of my setup, but I don't know how to upload photos from my camera onto VGchartz(hopefully an upload from computer feature comes eventually).

Thank you, but the TV you linked is LED, not OLED.

OLED is a great choice, but be sure to check the response time if the primary reason you're getting it is for gaming. 1ms would be perfect, but I'm not sure how much a 4k display with 1ms response time would cost

Whoops.

Well, Amazon is a great thing. I'm sure you can find a great deal on OLED TV's. One thing I will say is that the difference between LED and OLED isn't that much.

OLED allows TV's to be thinner basically. Anyhow, I would still recommend OLED TV's. Check your local bestbuy(if you have one). They always have good deals.

55 inch OLED TVs from €1699 to €3599

EDIT: Input lag for the cheapest is:

141 ms

47 ms (Game Mode)

I have no idea if this is good or bad!

EDIT 2: I hope you are aware that a NEW TV from Amazon US costs $2,796.

The price you see on your link is for used TVs! (13 used from $1,250.00, 2 refurbished from $2,199.99)

OLED is massively better than LED and a completely different technology. The depth of colour etc is far greater. Allows for true black etc which you can never have with a back lit LCD TV.

I've had OLED phones for 6 years now, went back to an LCD one for a year before getting another OLED one last year and absolutely hated the screen. (HTC One m7 so wasnt a budget handset either)

OP I currently game on a Panasonic plasma TV which used pioneer's kuro technology, however you can no longer get that sort of TV as the tech was unable to scale up to 4k sets so has now pretty much been abandoned.

My next TV will definitely be an OLED. Personally prefer flat to curved screens. But you do have to shell out a premium due too them being a more niche market and the technology is still pretty early in its development. I think they'll become much better priced in the next 12 months or so.

Really depends if the quality is worth the premium. But to me definitely yes.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

A few years ago I would have strongly recommended a projector for a gaming room, it's awesome gaming on a huge screen. However since 4K is creeping closer and closer, and 4k projectors are still over $8k without HDR, a TV is probably the better option.

This site does comprehensive reviews including suitability for gaming

Are you planning to add a dedicated sound system too? Marantz has very nice amplifiers atm as well as Onkyo. I'm still happy with Yamaha. Getting a subwoofer and at least 5 dedicated speakers (preferably all the same) does wonders for sound. It can be expensive though, it's not unusual to spend 2 to 3 times more on sound than on the tv. Speakers will last you a whole lot longer. I'm still using my B&W 600 series from '95 and a Rel Storm III subwoofer that was second hand back then already.

Don't foget to add dimmers for the lights, gaming in low light adds to immersion imo and is definitely needed for HDR. HDR is meant to be watched at very low ambient light levels to be able to see the extra detail, especially with OLED. (is generally a bit darker than LED with much better black levels)

I'm not ready to upgrade yet, still waiting to see if 4K projectors will come down in price and whether there's any chance of them supporting HDR. It's hard to go back to a smaller screen, gaming at 92" 1080p right now.

OLED is not the best. It has perfect contrast and perfect black, alongside record setting input lag and response time. However, those come at a significant price.

1. I hope you didn't like Grayscale. Because its blacks are mostly regulated by turning diodes off, the LG OLEDs dip into perfect black WAY WAY WAY WAY too fast. There's no detail in the dark, just perfect black. An example of what happens is watching the Dark Knight would consist of a floating jaw beating the crap out of barely distinguishable villains.

2. Bad upscaling. The processor LG puts in these TVs is just awful awful awful. Because of that, your upscaling will suffer during a transitional Era of 1080p content on 4K TVs.

3. Artifacts build character, I guess? Because that processor is utter shit, there's also not an effective Noise Algorithm on the TV. That means fast motion (especially when things move beyond something else like you would see all around the edges of items on your heads up display, or through transparent items that would also be on your HUD) will generation a lot of distortion. It'll look awful.

4. It's pricy AND has a limited lifespan. Not only are you looking at $3000-$25000 depending on size, but you're only going to have a good picture for three years. "Oh, I can get it to last longer." No. No you can't. The blues have a half-life. It WILL begin to drastically lose color in three years, regardless of usage.

5. Hello Burn-in, my old friend. You can count on your heads-up display burning in.

1. Scientists have proven the human eye can't catch anything faster than 13ms, so it could be 12ms and no one would know it.

2. Response time isn't really important for gaming, input lag is.
