Forums - General Discussion - Debate over North Carolina gender law

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/17120170/nba-moving-all-star-game-charlotte-north-carolina-bill

After months of speculation, the nba has officially gone ahead and remove the 2017 all star game from Charlotte. Adam silver said it was due to a law signed by North carolina. Called the Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act, it:

-legislates that in government buildings, individuals may only use restrooms and changing facilities that correspond to the sex on their birth certificates

-changes the definition of sex in the state's anti-discrimination law to "the physical condition of being male or female, which is stated on a person's birth certificate."

-prohibits municipalities in North Carolina from enacting anti-discrimination policies,[14] setting a local minimum wage, regulatingchild labor, or making certain regulations for city workers. The legislation also removes the statutory and common-law private right of action to enforce state anti-discrimination statutes in state courts

With the NBA removing the game, there have been more debates over the topic of transgenderism and other things.

I'd like to know a few things from everyone.

1) what do you think of transgenderism?

2) is gender determined by your sex?

3) are there only 2 genders?

4) With the NBA removing the all star game, is it hypocritical of them to keep the Charlotte Hornets in North carolina?

Hopefully there isn't any name calling or childish arguments.

1) I respect transgenderism, and I actively advocate for people to change if they feel unhappy with whom they are. I try to encourage them as much as I can and give all my support whenever I can. Having some real-life transgender friends really makes you understand how complicated the process is most of the time, and how it can really screw up a person if the necessary procedures aren't taken it with dilligence.

2) No, gender isn't determined by your sex.

3) Yes, I do think there's only two genders. Transgenderism is nothing but a label to indicate moving from one gender to the other. EDIT: I do guess I didn't take into account hermaphrodite people, for example. Don't take this answer of mine with full confidence, as I'd need to give it more thought.

4) I lack the necessary amount of information about this whole case before making a full judgment about it.

Makes no difference to me. All I can say is, you should go the the rest room where you fit in. If I look like a woman, then I can go in a women's restroom. If they spot me in there and kick me out? Then I didn't deserve to be in the women's restroom. In which case, man up and go to the men's room!

1) I support transgender people. I think that you should do or be anything you want in life, so long as you respect the rights of others. I see the fact that transgenderism exists as a failure of society. That for most of history the world has looked down upon so many people who are outside of norms, and that because of it some people can't feel comfortable identifying as their own sex.

2) No.

3) Yes, and anyone arguing against this seems crazy to me.

4) I think that moving a whole team is a much bigger decision than a game, regardless of the size of the either.

(I live in North Carolina, btw.)

bet: lost

1. I keep hearing often that transgenderism is a mental disorder, but there would need to be quite a lot of evidence for me to see that. My cousin is a marine and he recently came out as a FTM transgender. Still the same person I love. I'm glad he isn't getting bottom surgery, to be honest. Some things you just can't change and it's best not to go to the extremes.

2. I think gender is based on the brain and hormones compared to sex which is dictated by sex organs, chromosomes, DNA. I'm not too knowledgeable so I'm likely wrong here, lol.

3. Yes, only two genders.

4. I'll have to look into it more before I make a conclusion about it.

Also, awesome post. :)

Whoops, I was vague.

By charlotte I was referring to the Charlotte Hornets

Gender neutral must be an option. More and more people want the choice to raise their child as gender neutral so the child has more choice to decide whether it wants to be male or female. Imagine being able to change your gender like choosing what to eat, drink or wear?

The law is ridiculous. There has never been a case ever of a transgender attacking people in a bathroom. If a predator wants to assault someone, they would have to be incredibly stupid to do it the way the NC government describes.

In fact, the law is actually causing the problems that it's supposed to be preventing. There are actually videos of men following woman into bathrooms questioning whether they're male or female. So basically if a woman doesn't dress feminine enough they might be harassed by the local crazies.

The people in danger are the transgenders. They go into the bathrooms they identify with because they would be lynched if they did anything else. Especially in the hick states. That's one of those hardcore states where beating the tranny or homosexual would be the norm. And the government is actually trying to label these people by giving them separate washrooms.

1) I believe transgenderism is a genetic mistake that hospitals will eventually correct during pregnancy.  But for the moment, let them do what they want since we don't have a better solution.

2) yes.  By definition.  The rest is politics.

3) Yes, the rest is politics.

4) Not really.  The tournament was something happening on the national level.  So majority policy rules. Individual teams work on a team by team basis.

1) It's a legitimate psychological phenomenon. Some people are hardwired to be female, yet are unfortunately born male (and vice versa). However, the current fad of being transgendered is silly, not to mention damaging. On top of the dangerous scenerio of people mutilating themselves without quite realizing the lifetime consequences it carries, it also dilutes the legitimacy of people who are actually gender displaced. They're just another fad-chaser, and could potentially be denied the treatment they need.

2) No, and yes. But no... However, yes. It depends of what kind of gender you refer to. Physical/legal gender is the junk you were born with (unless your state allows you to change your legal gender). However, a popular new use of the term heavily applies to one's "perceived gender", or the gender they identify with. Much of the time, this is used almost exclusively for in-transition transgenders and post-op who have not legally changed. However, as if to further discredit actual transgenders, Tumblr has decided to apply it to entire made up genders, which brings me to-

3) There are three legitimate "genders" to identify as, however, ones is really just an amalgam of the other two. There is of course, male and female; and then there's Genderfluid, which is (AFAIK) moving back and forth. The false genders and sexual identities made up by Tumblr are really just a symptom of "Special Snowflake Syndrome"; a totally not fake condition that forces people to make up crazy bullshit about themselves to be special in a world where you are guaranteed by statistics to have at least seven others who are identical to you in twenty different ways.

4) Dunno, don't care. Sports and politics should stay or of each other's ways.

Hmmmm its a rather complicated topic. In my opinion gender is determined by the sex you were born with. Its not actually a matter of belief, but a matter of biology and respect to the next one. Before you jump on me, let me explain it.

In terms of biology, this is pretty clear.Even though you made cirurgies to change from man to woman(cutting your little friend down there, taking on hormones, those kind of things) its still important that you always remember that you were born a man(or woman) and people know about this.I am not versed in medicine, but what if you have a disease which treatment is only effective with woman or only man?Or a medicine that if taken, can be beneficial for a man but prejudicial for a woman, because of the natural differences they have that which cant be taken out which surgery? So for those cases, thats always important to not change(in my honest opinion) the official documents the gender you were born into.

In terms to respect for another its more tricky to detail.Wether you agree with me or not, there are people that would get offended if, for example, a transgender entered in the opposite gender bathroom that we was born with. Its not a matter of disrespect, they simply get unconfortable. Now, if you couldnt tell transgender and the "normal" man/woman apart, I think there wouldnt be any issue. So which "right" should be protected? Its a tricky situation. And creating a bathroom just for transgenders is a bit silly in my opinion. It would be a better solution just to make an extra all-gender bathroom that is individual so that they have the bathroom for themselves, but anyone can use it if its free.

As I said, its a delicate topic.I personally dont mind either way, as long as the transgender behaves in the bathroom, but that goes for anyone really. As for the person that wants to do it, I also dont have a problem with it.I judge a person by who they are, not by the societies values.
