Forums - Gaming Discussion - Box office mojo is expecting less than a 30 million weekend for Ice Age?

I agree that sounds terribly low for a big animated movie that also belongs to such a well-know and beloved series, but I fink it's partly because animated movies have longer legs.

Hard to say. I just know, the reviews have not been kind. I think the series needs to take a cue from its namesake and put itself on ice.

They're still making Ice Age movies? Is the first thing to pop in my head.

I think that the Ice Age movies have worn themselves into repetition and mediocrity. They seem like generic family-oriented kids films with subpar humor. There shouldn't be 5 of them in the first place. So I wouldn't be surprised if mainstream audiences caught ahold of this. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't.

bet: lost

The law of diminishing returns. Will still make a lot overseas though

I think they're directly competing with The Land Before Time now. "Kids love this prehistoric bullshit! Lets make 20 of these!"

Land Before Time didn't see cinema release after the first one, they were all straight to video, much like all the Disney sequels.

I think this films problem is that the first one came out in 2002, 14 years ago. The kids who loved it then are grown up while the films are still trying to cater for a young audience who might not have seen the first few films let alone were alive when they first came out. However, the last one made loads of money and generally the Ice Age films have a smaller budget that othr big CGI releases (only costs less than $100mil instead of $150-200 mil like Good Dinosaur did).

Not sure I'd see it myself, I like a good animated film and will see Dory when it comes out in the UK. I do think it's time to stop and for the animators to make soemthing new ( mean different to all the other films they make I mean... they make a lot).

Hmm, pie.

Never been a fan of Ice Age movies so I'm hoping they finally give the series a rest.

The budget is surprisingly low. 105 million, so it basically has already broke even. Not including marketing.

Including this weekend it'll have broken even and then some.  It seems these movies to decent in the US, but amazing WW.  It hasn't even opened in China, yet, which will be a big boost.  Still, I think this one is going to perform worse than the last one.  Maybe $600M-$700M WW.  Still enough for them to justify another sequel.

That's exactly what I think everytime they announce a new one too. Oh, and speaking about unnecessary sequels, we're getting another Shrek movie... yay.
