Good. Now if they'd just start arresting people who download illegally...

That's impossible.

It'd be too much effort to do so. It's better to let some people pirate than to focus on making most people who pirate go to jail

I wouldn't be so sure of that.  I mentioned earlier that I was fined out of court for illegal downloads in the past.  I can only imagine what would have happened if this did go to court, I was found guilty and I refused to pay the fine.  Jail time?  I didn't look into it that far, and I didn't want to.  But I can't say it's impossible.

I don't think they would need more than a couple dozen people to make an example of to make people think twice.  Charge them together with the site owners as an ongoing criminal enterprise under the RICO Act.  If my memory serves, they could be all charged collectively with the charges.  Just make sure you pick members who are particularly bad (as in, they have consistently and frequently chosen to pirate instead of purchase) and the case would be pretty open shut   And that's easily 2.5 to 10 years in prison along with potentially thousands in fines.  If they wanted to make an example of true criminal copyright infringers and help stem the tide on that front, that's the way they could do it.

Yes we all know how good the Law has been in putting the "Really" bad criminals in jail/prison.

I didn't say it was necessarily easy.  However, Criminal Copyright laws have pretty rarely been misapplied.  Courts do are pretty strict, most copyright cases get kicked to civil court.  So they would actually have to make sure they handpicked the right ones to construct a conspiracy people and the courts would get behind (even though technically anyone who downloaded more than a handful of torrents could be lumped in, but it just wouldn't fly in practical terms).

Criminal Copyright Infringement of this scale will bring a lot of fines and/or up to 10 years in prison.  Unless they charge him with multiple counts and the court hands down *consecutive* sentences rather than *concurrent*.  This is unusual in cases like this, but if they were to do it he could easily be sentenced to decades in prison.

Out of curiosity, did you quit downloading stuff illegally?

Let me share my story. I got careless and forgot to stop sharing an old movie I downloaded about 3 years back. A few weeks later my ISP wrote me a letter and threaten to lower my internet speed if I continue. It was Verizon lol. Anyways, after that I stop being careless, and I switched to a different ISP. lol

That's alot of "theys" there buddy. I know it's tempting, but generlizing is not such a good idea.

Clearly he is talking about the US "Government" not "All" the people of the US. Since lets face it, how would this have anything to do with the average person of the USA?.

And in this case now that we have laid the foundation for what he was talking about, i have to agree with him.

The USA does interfare with other countrys more then any other that i know of.

Question. What percentage of illegally traded/shared files on that site were of US origin? More than half? More than 70%? If so, how is this NOT a US issue?

Let's just say that the stakes were too high to chance with a family involved. Even if I were single and looking back at what I experience, it just wasn't worth it since I already had a pleathora of distractions for my personal entertainment.  Video game related, I have a more than plenty backlog to keep me busy.  Like I mentioned in an earlier post, it was as issue of convenience.

He said it would be a worse penalty than murder, though.  I was hoping he'd give more facts on that conclusion.  I'm assuming that since he said it, he knows the exact figures and didn't just throw it out off the top of his head.
