Forums - Gaming Discussion - 3 years have passed, how do you still RATE The Last of Us?

I'd say 8/10

It did a lot of things really well, but I felt that a lot of the gameplay could have been more engaging and the pay off of the story was quite weak.

SP: 6/10. Gameplay wise I found absolutely nothing special about it. There were some unique factors like the instakill enemies, I enjoyed that. But for every unique element there were 4 or 5 tired cliche elements the game not only featured but seemed to embrace. You could literally see when your next firefight was going to happen just by the level design. Stealth was also a joke, the AI sucked and you could just funnel enemies one by one into a room and incapacitate them. But the narrative was good, the game world was great, the little tidbits of story you pick up here and there from survivors was fantastic.

MP: 7/10. I would have originally rated this a 9 or 10, and in fact I think I have posted here before and rated the game an 8 or 9 based solely on the MP. But greedy DLC not only made the game very pay to win, but it shifted the entire meta of the MP away from strategic, tactical bliss and into run and gun crap. I rate it a 7 for the brutality, and the rare rare occasion where you join a match and find people using tactics. But it's really a shame what happened to the MP. This was my first PS4 title as I had loads of fun with the MP on PS3 and it's just meh now imho.

So I would say a 7 overall with a bigger emphasis on MP than SP from me.

I'd give it a 10/10 for ratings. Naughty dog brought the industry to a new height, which I suppose isn't anything new for that studio. They've always been at the fore front of gaming

As a very empathic father, I can never make it past the opening scene.

Just nope.

It's strange because when i first played this I wasn't a father. I now have a 2 year old daughter and that scene at the start hits me hard compared to how it did when I was childless. Also it makes me really like Ellie a lot more even though I thought she was a awesome character first playthrough.

The sheer desperation of the entire scene is traumatic, but to end it in such a sudden and helpless way... How scared she is, how scared he is, and the growing understanding of what was happening with none of the acceptance. It's a terrifying nightmare that every parent will have at some point (though hopefully not in person).

Still a fucking amazing game, 10/10... and people used to think I hated Naughty Dog cause I'm not a big Uncharted fan haha

My Joel & Ellie statue still sits proudly on my shelf :)

Playing it for the first time on my PS4, so far it's been super.

7/10 tbh, no boss fights and only 3 different enemies and no open world

Resident Evil 6 would get a 8/10 maybe a 9 as a comparison, dueto its massive content and enemy variety

It's still a fucking masterpiece. Favorite game of all time (well, tied with super Mario RPG on the snes) I'm thinking of going back to platinum the game on PS4 soon.

While some could argue the gameplay mechanics have aged when compared to MGS V, some could just as easily argue that MGS V's gameplay mechanics were far too complicated. Complexity and diversity does not necessarily make a combat system superior (see Dark Souls vs. Bloodborne). Simplicity has it's own benefits and I would say that The Last of Us's gameplay has held up very well. And of course, I suspect people will still make jokes about how no one ever detected Ellie, that was because that was a conscious decision to limit frustration.

Its story is still as moving as ever. And the art style and visuals are just as moving and luscious as ever. I still think the snow of the winter chapter is astounding.

I really can't think of a game with mainstream appeal that has come out since that can overtake its claim to being the greatest game of all time. Of course, this may all change come next Valentine's day.
