Not really.
Animal Crossing has bigger appeal to the mobile audience too -- more casuals, and tons of women ... women are what drove Candy Crush to huge numbers. Mobile is a market that is totally tilted to Nintendo's appeal.

You really underestimate Animal Crossing, namely in Japan.
Animal Crossing actually is a good deal bigger than Final Fantasy, the last real Animal Crossing game (New Leaf on 3DS) shipped 10 million copies, Final Fantasy XIII shipped 6.6 million copies, and had a larger userbase to sell to as well (100+ million PS3s + 360s).
The only FF game that's sold over 10 million without several re-releases is actually Final Fantasy VII.
Animal Crossing on DS has outsold every Final Fantasy game to boot.

You're not wrong. Nintendo has stated that most of the audience for Animal Crossing in Japan are women and they've also stated continue targeting that particular demographic. Plus Isabelle is among, if not the, most popular characters in Japan, even beating out Pikachu.

You don't think Final Fantasy is more popular than Fire Emblem?
There are many games which try to attract a similar audience as Candy Crush, doesn't mean they are anywhere near as successful.

Animal Crossing doesn't try to attract that audience it already does attract them, if the is one franchise that if handled right can explode on mobile it's AC.

The audience is just tailor made for them. They are going take out that market like a chubby kid in a cake store. It basically is the Wii/DS audience but several times larger. |
And you know how much stick (even bans) I got over saying that? Will you cook the crow, I'll do the serving.
Bottom line is Nintendo as a company has a long and healthy future.

Right now just about everyone is playing it, but to be perfectly honest, as the game is now it really doesn't feel like something with long term staying power. They need to bring new stuff to it polish what's already there to keep people playing. Getting the servers fixed would be a good start. |
The news feed running on the bottom of the news this morning on TV, reported that Nintendo stock dropped sharply.

On Australian TV it was reported that Nintendo's shares had dropped sharply but not how much.
