Forums - Gaming Discussion - Windows 10 for Business to Introduce Subscription Fee

Subscription based OS concept actually can be much cheaper for a lot of business. Not sure if this will be the only option but probably just another option that companies can choose how they spend their money on the OS. The business world and consumer world is totally different and MS treat them differently. The reason subs can be cheaper for business is that usually its the upfront cost. Spreading cost across years even though in the end it could be more money allows MS to make updates a lot quicker and allow the business to not get hit with huge software cost upfront that affect their bottom line.

Some of you talk about going Linux because the distro is free but running your business on it is not. It cost just as much if not more than running Windows and if you have a MSDN sub you get a lot of support and software from MS that is free. So to wrap this up, this is a non issue for PC gamers.

Microsoft has done some stupid shit, but I don't see this happening. Would easily be the the dumbest thing they ever did. They'd easily lose more than half the Win 10 user base.

Almost made it. The notifications have stopped!!! However the icon is still in the task bar and theres still that 7.2GB $WINDOWS.~BT directory.

Your completely tricked me. I thought it was one of those pop up reminders for win 10 and I tried to click "Decline free offer".

That would generate a butt load of cash. I doubt it but if they do and gamers decide to drop out, how do they expect to play X1 Exclusives? Back to Xbox haha. They cant really lose, no matter which way they take. I hope they dont do it though.

You don't. There are enough games to play in this world.

That’s a lot of good quality titles to miss out on.

As XBO has proven, gamers can do just fine without Xbox exclusives.  And if they do do this on a consumer level, I see a lot of gamers switching to SteamOS, Apple, or just "downgrading" to Windows 7.

And yes, just like with XBO, if MS continues to push anti-consumer policies using their past dominance as leverage, they can lose.  Big.  The XBO will be lucky to end the gen at 50M, far from the 100M+ the PS4 is targeting.  A far cry from last gen.  Imagine if Google comes out with a retooled Android for PCs, that supports Steam.  They could crush Windows if enough people get upset about MS's policies.

Sorry to say, you can’t just make an OS and expect it to be successful. At this stage Windows is still the most popular OS in the world. Ask anyone what Windows is and tell somebody what Linux is. You can’t just push into the market and expect it to do wonders. Can Google make an OS as good as Windows? Haha an OS is not easy to create and implement.

I think you underestimate the quality and popularity of Xbox franchises. Forza Horizon series for example would be a shame to miss out on especially since the 3rd one is around the corner. Future Rare Titles and obviously the next Halo games are not games people will just move on because of a pay wall. Heck Sony added a pay wall to the PS brand and they gain more customers.. work that out.

Do you think Gamers are just going to start ignoring a platform because of some policies? If the service is good and deserving than people won’t care.

depends on the price and benefits.
$60 bucks a year for windows as a serivce would be something i consider.

That is funny...  Why would you spend $60 a year for Windows?

If Microsoft pisses off enough people with their policies then I can see a mass migration of PC gamers to another OS.  I'm already looking to move onto something else around 2020 or so.

You can find good games everywhere and Windows is used by more than gamers so MS wouldn't win with this.

I think this will be just another option for consumers. You either buy it or "rent" it. Anyway, for 7 bucks a month it's better to buy a license during Black Friday or any other deal.

Google already as an OS.  It's called Android.  Something millions upon millions use everyday on their phone/tablet.  It's extremely easy to use.  Slap a slightly different coat of paint on it, put it in a good laptop, with Steam support, and I'm sure many would switch over.  Especially if you can easily connect it to your phone's account.

Sorry, Xbox franchises may be good, but they are not necessary.  Which is evidenced by the fact that every franchise MS has has seen a decline in sales.  This just shows you that the initial dislike of XBO policies and the appeal of the PS4 has been enough for some gamers to just walk away from them.  And the reason people are fine with PS Plus is because Sony didn't just make you buy online access, like MS was fine with doing.  They actually gave you something back in return, free games and discounts.  Something MS was forced to start doing, as well.
