And...the software for Wii U? The casual market fueled the software sales for Nintendo's first party content. Now that the casual market is gone from Nintendo, the software sales on Wii U pale in comparison to Wii.

It speaks for itself there too. 1st party dominates. All it takes is for people to get interested in their hardware for their software to reach untouchable numbers again. The takeaway point is that no matter how many people own a Nintendo console, their 1st party IP is ALWAYS the top selling.

Of course first party dominates on the wii u! Ever since bayonetta 2 came out 2 years ago not a single notable 3rd party game was even released on the wii u. That's not first party dominating, that's first party winning by default

I didn't know Tokyo Mirage Sessions was Fire Emblem. That game sure has changed.

Also, Atlus a 1st party developer. I should make a thread! News to me!!!

Exclusives absolutely matter, but having the major 3rd party games matters more.

Hence, take 3rd party support from either X1 or PS4 and the average consumer wouldn't buy them.

Mirage sessions uses characters from fire emblem so to claim it as a typical third party game is stretching it.

but for the sake of an argument, let's assume it is a third party title. Is one niche third party title supposed to accurately reflect the performance of all third party titles?

My earlier point still stands. Wii u first party titles win by default because there aren't many third party options.

It sold consoles, but it wasn't first party and never was considered to be so, Rockstar is more popular than Sony's first party developers.

Not gonna argue with you on that one.  But other than Nintendo and Sonic, "First Party" has never been massively relevant in the gaming field.

*Edit* Except Gran Turismo, but that was more due to the game, than the fact that it was first party.

The only time a First Party game counts, is when it hits a market that hasn't previously been successfully hit by anyone else.

There are more exceptions to that. God of War was a game changer, and the fact that it was so unique also sold millions of PS2, PS3 and PSP. Halo was a very successful game due to the way it changed how FPS games are played on consoles. It sold millions of Xbox, 360 and One. First party games matter, but like you said, they matter more for their own quality rather than being first party games. Good and innovative games have a market but it has nothing to do with exclusivity.

That's why this thread doesn't make sense, I wouldn't buy a first party game over a third party game if the third party game is better just because the other one is first party. That is a regressive attitude that wouldn't help the industry get better, so games should matter to us if they are good.

The amount available doesn't stop a game from selling better, and yet the first third party title doesn't appear until #17 in the top selling Wii U titles.

First party games matter. Not as much as people sometimes make it out to be though. Otherwise Wii U would be dominating.
