Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo having all their games available everywhere a better business than restricting them to a console?

Could Nintendo make more money by having their software everywhere?

Could the potential sales of software, spread through various platforms like PC, Sony, Microsoft, mobile, etc. be more profitable for Nintendo than keeping their software restricted to their consoles?

Or is the potential of having their software push their hardware - and the profits and opportunities this yields - better business for Nintendo in the end?

This thread is not about what you would prefer, but what you think leaves or could leave more money for Nintendo.

Discuss.

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

No matter how many devices they put their games on, I don't think it would ever make them as much money as they did in the Wii/DS era...

Doubt it... We have seen how long it takes for Nintendo to develop games for new console with their own OS and etc with the wiiU... Doing it for every platform unless its streaming will result in either their polish going down by a lot or each game taking a lot longer to come out.

On top of that, they won't get that lovely royalty money or the extra money they get for a sale from their online store.

Edit: Now granted their console sales suck this gen but its not like everything went right for the wiiU and it failed... Nintendo goofed on many parts including but not limited to marketing, launch price, storage, naming, specs for price, promise of third party without delivering etc etc etc. My point is, they have tons of room to improve their departments and hardware. If they make a console where they didn't goof up on most things and it still flops, then maybe.

Perhaps, but I do think that they'd lose several defining features about themselves in the process. Whether they change to the point that I stop playing them remains to be seen, but so far I haven't been enjoying the 2 apps they released on mobile.

I very much doubt that ...

If the Wii is an example to go by, there's arguably higher profit margins to be made in selling their hardware then the other console manufacturers ...

Personally speaking, I view the HD twins audiences thirst for technological superiority to be a fault business wise because it lowers potential for profits ...

I bet Sony and Microsoft would very much like it if they could sell outdated hardware for a high margin but they can't cause their customers have higher standards ...

I don't think Nintendo should go 3rd party just yet. Giving up on collecting royalties from other people software seems too premature with the current state of Nintendo.

That depens on the margin they could get.

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

Yeah I think they certainly would make more money, mk8 for example only sold 6 million because of the WiiU. Multiplatform it would have sold anywhere from 25 million to 40 million.

The thing everyone always seems to forget about Nintendo going third party is that platform holders collect fees from third partys. So not only would Nintendo miss out on collecting these fees themselves (and say what you will about WiiU, but 3ds has stellar third party support) but also loose the benefit of not having to pay platform fees themselves.

Not to mention that Nintendo software sells fine to spectacular even on failing Nintendo hardware because at least the core NIntendo fans are there.

I think going third party would have worse rampifications for Nintendo than most seem to think.

Well if they have that many fans that dont buy Nintendo consoles, then its at least a great safety net.
