I posed this question on Nintendo Life, and I think it is relevant on here as well. Was the Game Boy Color a sucessor to the Game Boy? Was it an upgrade (a la the DSi, New Nintendo 3DS, Project Scorpio, PS4 Neo) or even just a hardware revision (like the Game Boy Advance SP, DS Lite, PS2/PS3 Slim).

I say it was a sucessor, this Iwata Asks article says so as well.

"2. Game Boy Color™: A handheld game system released in October 1998 as the successor to the Game Boy system. It featured a color screen.

3. Game Boy Advance: A handheld game system released on March, 2001 as the successor to the Game Boy Color. "

Admittedly, I don't think any sales figures exist of the Game Boy Color, as it always seems to be lumped with the Game Boy.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 151 million (was 73, then 96, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million)

PS5: 115 million (was 105 million) Xbox Series S/X: 57 million (was 60 million, then 67 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

I always thought of it as a successor with backward compatibility but for some reason the popular opinion is another.

I'd like to think of it as being like how the NEO and Scorpio will be to the PS4 and XB1, because it's a power increase that allows for more to be done on the hardware. But the fact that it had so many exclusives is something else, though. And it's often said to be a different platform, by Nintendo.

It's a pseudo-successor, I'd leave it at that.

bet: lost

its like 2ds - 3ds - new 3ds

I used to think of it as a successor, but I guess it really is just more of an upgrade, considering most "Game Boy Color" games could also be played on the original Game Boy anyways.

I view it as a sucessor, only 28% of GBC games were playable on the original gameboy. (576 GBC games, 160 Backwards Compatible).

New 3ds doesn't have 416 exclusive games though :P

It was definitely a successor. It had improved specs and a lot of games that weren't BC.

Eh... New 3DS is technicaly a successor. Primarily due to it having exclusive content.

Of course it was, sales are set apart between Game Boy Colour and GB meaning that they are from different generations, the GBA and the GBA SP aren't divided.

Actually I don't think you will be able to find sales for the GBC that aren't grouped together with GB sales. However the GBC is listed as being a 5th generation console and the GB a 4th generation console.
