Forums - Movies & TV - Secret life of Pets pushes out over 100 million domestic on a meager 75 million budget! Pets breaks records!!!

Well Dory has already made over 400m in the US so I don't see how 20m on a weekend with another big animation movie is anything bad. Tarzan on the other hand is not doing well.

The trailer was awful with moronic jokes. I had no doubt it would do well given the current movie climate. One of the worst years for movies in recent memory.

Where is this year's Ex Machina or 99 Homes???

Illumination seem to make all their films on a consistently small budget (relatively speaking). It's pretty impressive:

Despicable Me: $69 million
Hop: $63 million
The Lorax: $70 million
Despicable Me 2: $76 million
Minions: $74 million
The Secret Life of Pets: $75 million
Sing: $75 million

wouldn't call a 75 million budget 'meager' when a film company is likely ending up with less than half of box office revenue AND their released budgets often don't include some of the bonus marketing costs.

But Disney is on a roll lately for sure

Secret Life of Pets isn't Disney... :-3

Is it any good?

It's from the people who made despicable me 2. Of course it isn't any good.

Haven't heard anything for Tarzan though. Wonder if it'll flop

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

That's my kid's favorite movie, and it has the happy song!
Pets is currently trending lower on imdb than Despicable Me 2 though and it usually goes down as more ratings come in.

Universal/Illumination's films are done by a french studio named Mac Guff. Who always turn in a good looking animated film on a decent budget. Compared to their rivals who often get weighed down by production bloat. Not to mention wage fixing where the top brass come out like bandits while exploiting workers.

20th Century Fox's Blue Sky Studios also make animated movies on a relatively small budget but not quiet as low as Illumination.  The guy that started Illumination actually used to work for Fox and helped them aquire Blue Sky Studios.
