Forums - Gaming Discussion - Rocket League crate system leaked and confirmed

This was found in the Rocket League files:

Comment from Jeremy Dunham, VP at Psyonix: https://www.reddit.com/r/RocketLeague/comments/4ruvt7/csgo_crate_system_planned/d54zav5

Hey guys,

Those assets are, indeed, early pieces of an upcoming system we plan on implementing to fund our esports prize pools and events. We plan on officially announcing it next month at (or near) the RLCS Live Finals since it directly relates to that event and other events like it, but since this image came out before our official word, we wanted to clarify some things for you:

  • Crates will contain cosmetic content only. We have a strict "Don't Sell Advantage" policy for Rocket League, and we're sticking with that.
  • There will be no Steam Marketplace integration with crates. We are definitely aware of the problems related to third-party gambling in other games and we are not interested in taking that approach.
  • Players who don't want to interact with this system can hide it entirely with a single checkbox. Also of note, this won't affect or impact our current item-drop system in any way.
  • We also want to reassure you guys that we are sticking with our approach to keep introducing free new Arenas, Modes, and Items, along with the occasional paid DLC just like we always have.

Hope this helps shed some light on what we have planned. It's actually a pretty cool system that we'll be happy to share detail about next month.

Best regards,

Aaaaaaaah, so that's why they significantly reduced the drop rate of items and shortly after added hundreds of new items. The more you know :)

Yeah, this won't be good...

It's annoying how sometimes when an indie studio gets a hit on their hand, instead of continuing with what made the game a hit in the first place, they start milking the game/IP to squeeze out every last bit of profit from it. I've seen this from other studios as well, not just Psyonix.

They could've easily survived with just releasing new DLC every few months. But at least since that collector's edition we know how low they will stoop to just get slightly more money.

Also great timing with all the controversy about gambling in video games^^

Well, at the least there won't be a Steam Marketplace integration. That's a relief. As long as they keep their word that it won't affect or impact the current item-drop system in any way, then I'm fine with it.

The current item system is already fucked. They made sure to fuck it as far away from the crate system as possibleso that people won't make that connection.

Last thing I heard was that even new players are stuck with the new system while you could get all your common items 1 match at a time not too long ago.

This game is so much fun, I don't care about the cosmetics at all.

Platinums: Red Dead Redemption, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Terminator Salvation, Uncharted 1, inFamous Second Son, Rocket League

Perfectly OK. Overwatch does this and it's all fine.

In fact, as long as the crates remain cosmetic, I'm actually glad they are doing this to help their prize pools. Bonus points for evading the steam gambling issue

If it's going to be like the CSGo system, you earn crates and then have to buy keys to unlock them, whereas Overwatch you can buy crates, but any you earn in game you can open at no cost so it's not quite the same. We'll have to see what they actually do and what the cost is.

This sort of thing doesn't bother me in either case, more than happy for developers to charge for cosmetics, I may dip in I bought the DLC packs mostly to support the devs more than get the items.

Don't ruin the moment

Currently Playing: Rocket League (PC/PS4), Dead Cells (PC)

I hate overwatch crates. It takes so long to earn one, then when you finally get one, it's four bloody sprays.
