True, yet I find it a worrying mentality not to exhaust all other options first before using lethal force. That's kind of a theme with these police shootings. Sending in a bomb after a few hours is a sign of admitting defeat. Plus the guy who did it got the easy way out. Luckily he seems to be enough of a nut job not to become a martyr (except to even worse nut jobs)
Maybe pressure from the media plays a role too, get it resolved quickly, no 2 day standoff media circus.

Not just the media, the public very often is up in arms fast when a major shooting happens and want the cops to get the guy almost no matter what.  The cops definitely didn't want that, it further fuels panic and anger.  As for how long they should go without using lethal force, if the person makes it crystal clear - as this guy did - that he's going to shoot until he is put down, is it really worth further human loss to arrest him?  Personally, any killing based on racist anger or prejudice as this one apparently was is a hate crime, regardless of what color commits the act and what color the victim is and I have no sympathy for those who commit such acts.  If this were an open Nazi or KKK member, we wouldn't bat an eye.  This guy should get no different treatment.

Besides, they negotiated for hours and he refused to surrender, threatened the officers and the city, and then fired on the officers.  Also, he was wearing body armor and was a military veteran so it's a good thing they didn't breach cause there's very good odds he would have killed or seriously injured one or more.

Did he wear a gas mask too? Plus he'll get tired like any other human. It's a slippery slope imo. Suicide by police should not be an option. He got what he deserved, yet the families he wrecked also deserved to see him stand trial and receive the worst sentence.
A remote controlled high powered water cannon, drones with taser or tranq darts. Would be nice if people got as creative at safe non lethal ways to take crazies down as lethal ways.

eh, I don't think the police did anything wrong here.

They did say suspect, meaning they weren't even accusing him of the crime but wanted to question him just in case, and considering he was openly carrying a gun at a protest where people were shot... I think it's fair that he was a suspect.

What this really shows is how these social media idiots massively overreact to everything... again.

You know what's overraction? Getting a lot of death threats in a nut state like Texas.

Imagine if a police officer had a cellphone and saw his police department tweet in the vicinity of the incident and happened to see this guy. He probably would've blasted this guy in fear of being shot first.

This is not a joke, Texas is a crazy state.

As lawyer I can taste the lawsuit... and its delicious.

Pretty much

Dude took a gun to a protest. The police did nothing wrong here. They were making split second decisions with very little information.

I never ceased to be amazed at how entitled so many people are when it comes to having police protection.  Being a police officer in the US is one of the world's hardest jobs. People need to remember that they live in a free country. If you make being a police officer too hard or dangerous, people just won't do it as a job. There's no inherent reason anyone should.

Complaining about stuff like this betrays that exact sense of entitlement. If you dont expect mistakes like this to happen, you really haven't understood the nature of their job.

Shit happens when things like that go down. They called him a suspect, not a cop killer. Maybe next time don't open carry an assault rifle to a peaceful protest?

The guy was walking around with an AR-15 when a bunch of people were shot to death.

Yeah, they should have been a lot more casual and laid back about it. Maybe they could have played some Pokemon Go while they waited for the murderer to turn themselves in.

I have a friend in Texas who mentioned in a mail recently that she got her open carry license and will be proudly display her gun now. I didn't even know in what context she was talking about, but it seemed to be some kind of issue with protesting gun laws.

So if that man was openly carrying a gun and it was legal, then he is not the one to blame. It's the only viable way he could have defended himself from these shooters.

...and yes, my post turned sarcastic at some point.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

"But how then would the good guys with a gun stop the bad guys with a gun?" --NRA

(I do agree that a peaceful protest is less likely to remain so if weapons are present.  Common sense >2nd amendment)
