I get conflicted when deciding between MGS and MGS3. I have to give MGS some extra points for the story and the originality but MGS3 was infinitely more playable if you had the Subsistence version with the third-person camera. I might do it this way: Subsistence >= Metal Gear Solid > Snake Eater > Sons of Liberty.
It's hard to say, mainly because I loved the first game so much and many of the improvements in the third game exist because of technology and people yelling at Kojima, not innovation.
I could go back and forth on those two all day. And I can't wait for MGS4.
I like the original the best because I think it had the best setting/atmosphere, best characters and bosses, and best story overall.
Next I liked MGS 3 because it had the best gameplay out of the three, and it had pretty cool bosses as well, but I think it had the weakest story of the three.
Part two was good, but could have been great if the story was a little less confusing, and you could play as Snake more or if Raiden wasn't so weak.
