Forums - Gaming Discussion - Game that made you a fan of a specific gaming genre

Like you didn't know you liked a genre of video game so much until you played that specific game, and then you started loving the genre.

What games sold you a gaming genre?

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

Final Fantasy Tactics. I think since that released in.....1997? 98?....my favorites in the genre have been from Nintendo. I played 3 Fire Emblem games with Path Of Radiance being my fav. Does Advance Wars count? But yeah, FFT turned me on to the TBSRPG genre.

CoD MW2 was what really got me into FPS. Before that all I played were platformers and rpgs. After that game I started the Gen playing more FPS than any other genre out there :P

Was never big on RPGs until I started playing FF3 on the DS

Platformer: I guess Mario probably got me into platforming, though I donno what you'd consider Prince of Persia but I liked that too

FSP: Star Wars Dark Forces

RTS: Can't really remember if it was Age of Empires or the first Warcraft, I was obsessed with both

Point and Click: There was some mickey mouse game, a mother goose game, and later a game called Wrath of the Gods set in ancient Greece

4x: Not sure if it really qualifies but a game called Rise and Rule was kinda my first experience with that, and I became quite infatuated with it

RPG: Final Fantasy and Phantasy Star games, can't recall which was first

Flying Games: There was a really simple game ages ago, I think it was called Red Baron or something. After that I loved playing the Star Wars Rebel Assault games with a joystick

MMO: I honestly can't even remember as I played so many once I discovered them... Everquest, Anarchy Online, some game I can't remember the name of, Asheron's Call, eventually Star Wars Galaxies and Final Fantasy XI... I probably played nearly a dozen of them before I started playing WoW.

City Builder: The Caesar series, beginning with Caesar II though I much prefered III

Really, most of these were when i was quite young so my memory is a tad foggy

I used to be a snob about FPS games. I looked down on them and thought myself a superior type of gamer because I liked RPGs and such. Fallout 3 changed my mind completely and now some FPS games are among my very favorites.

Gran Turismo (the first one) was the first racing game that I loved. Earlier arcade racers were fun but in a much less visceral way. Gran Turismo grabbed me from the very first race, which I kept losing on the last lap. It drove me crazy at the time but it totally hooked me.

FF VI made me a fan of RPGs. The game was breathtaking.

Black Ops 2 into FPS. GTA 4 into Open World. Tekken into Fighting.
