Forums - Microsoft Discussion - XB1 S is a Better Value than a $400 PC

Yeah whether is a better value is entirely subjective. But if you buy a pre build computer $400 dollars doesn't get you much unless you go with a off brand computer. A halfway decent pre build computer by a major brand will cost at least $600 dollars.

With PSN and PSPlus you are also getting much more value with a price around the PC.

Sure, if you like being handed games instead of deciding what you want to get.

Not to mention the consoles come with a gamepad, further adding value!

PC's you need an OS and a mouse+keyboard ontop of the price of the hardware.

With every console generation, a new controller is needed. With PC, you can still use your 20-year-old keyboard and mouse if they still work. And the chances are pretty high that you already own a keyboard and a mouse. Not everyone does, but a lot of people already have a desktop, and even laptop people usually have a mouse.

Anyway, apparently this is another PC vs. consoles comparison. And yet again, it conveniently forgets subscription costs, more expensive games, the cost of potentially owning multiple consoles, and probably a lot of other, less important but still relevant things. I really doubt there's just one objective truth that applies to everyone when it comes to PC vs. consoles. For some people, PC will offer better value, while to some other people, consoles will offer better value. There might be an objective answer for an average consumer, I doubt almost anyone on this site is qualified to determine it because determining it is most certainly not simple (or rather, it probably is relatively simple, but requires access to a good bit of data, some of which may not even have been collected).

Sometimes you actually get games that you want.

Also in this comparison I did add subscription cost. Owning multiple consoles isn't really relevant for this.

No but sales show that the games that have been given for gold are games people care about.

Are they? they tend to be the same games given away with other similar programs. Older games that have already spent the vast majority of their selling prowess.

Yes but these games that are given can bring in new fans and some people might want a old game but never got the chance to play it so it being free is a positive.

Of course for 400$ a console has a better value. I think 700$ to 900$ is the sweet spot for a value-for-money PC.
The PSN / XBLA free games argument is pointless form my point of view. I've barely have the free time to play the games I want to play, let alone a bunch of random old games (which I would have probably already played if I was interested to begin with). I'm still paying for a service that is free on PC and getting something I've never asked for in return.

4K Blue Ray Player, 4K Upscalling and HDR capable.

Age old argument, obviously a console is cheaper but in the end a PC will be cheaper for someone that plays a lot of games because there are no monthly costs and games on the PC cost less, unless you trade in our games, then, console gaming might be a cheaper option!

Overall physical collections and ease of use are the 2 big appeals

When people argue that PCs can be cheaper and more powerful than their console counterparts, they're usually assuming people buy the parts on Newegg and make their own computer. Even then, it's really sketchy whether it's really possible now that the consoles are 300 dollars.

But the big thing is that people by and large don't build their own computers as it's a huge hassle as well as a huge pain in the ass and it requires expertise that most people lack (and frankly, I don't quite understand the love of building one's own PC. I would much rather spend the extra 200 dollars on a pre-built machine, but that's my preference). If you want a pre-made desktop with graphical power comparable to a console, you're going to need to spend a minimum of 750 dollars.

In Brazil a XOne is R$1200 while a gaming PC with similar performance would be something like R$2500, but PC games are about half the price of XOne games at launch. For people that buy lots of games, a PC is a better value here, but if you just plan to buy games at least 2 months after their release and no more than 1 game/month, the XOne is much better value, because it is probably gonna last around 5 years, and during this time we expend R$600~700 with live, while we would expend more than that to keep the PC hardware able to play all games during the same period.

Most people have a computer, so all it is is upgrading. Espeically now the 480 is a thing, it would trash an Xbone and PS4 at a low low cost.

Where do people find these $400 gaming PCs?

At Newegg for example, the cheapest PC on par with a Xbox One costs $570, excluding shipping.

And then you need a monitor on top of that.

Here in Sweden the difference becomes even bigger. The cheapest Xbox One costs $290 while it's difficult to find a PC with similar specs for under $700.

Why would you ever use that arguement?? Can the Xbox One be played without a screen or something??
