Forums - PC Discussion - So AMD 480 is a dud, not nearly the amazing deal after all

Oh, there's Vega rumours already?!

If it's 60% above Fury X I would accept that, although before the 14nm tech launched I was dreaming of a new AMD GPU being 2.0x Fury X.

60% above the Fury X is exactly twice the performance of a RX 480. Do you really think they can do that in 2016, considering the RX 480 already draws a hefty 160W? That would need serious architectual improvements.

I don't really expect Vega this year. It should be around the same time as the new Titan early next year.

That would be a disaster for AMD. Even early 2017 would mean 9 months behind Nvidia, having absolutely nothing to offer at the high-end. How long was it when AMD was so far behind last time?

No it's gotta come out 2016. I know there are many people holding off from buying a 1080 or 1070 because they're waiting for more information about Vega. But I don't think high-end gamers can wait that long, another 8-9 months. Even I will have a tough time to wait that long, and I refuse to buy anything from Nvidia.

Damn!! Want nu computer now!!!

Oh yeah, not I recall I've seen Vega rumoured to have 4096 stream processors. But hasn't Fury X also got 4096 stream processors though and is clocked over 1Ghz? And yet Vega is supposed to be 60% faster than it? I don't follow. That would require architectural improvements out of this world.

Personally I don't mind Fury X power use, unless I buy two and do crossfire. Which I likely won't since one Vega GPU probably will cost $650 or something.

I heard rumors the Vega is produced at TSMC in 16nm, like the 10XX Nvidia chips, so maybe it can clock at 1.6GHz+ like those chips

Wow. So does that mean that it's a common opinion now that the TSMC 16nm tech is superior to the 14nm from GlobalFoundries/Samsung?

Because performance from a node can't mature, right? Only yields can mature, but not the tech itself, or? Or can it be improved and tweaked a little bit?

afaik tests with Apples A9 chip (produced both at TSMC and Samsung) showed a bit of an advantage in 16nm at first (longer battery time when gaming/watching videos), but tests a few month later found no more discrepancies in efficiency

from my experience more advanced stepping can definitely improve the chip quality and not only the yields and Global Foundries as a lincensee of Samsung might be quite a bit behind at this, but should catch up once gains become smaller

I want a new computer too but I'll be damned if I buy some cut down shit like the 1080.

Could you elaborate? I know it's a relatively small chip, but perhaps you mean something else?

What hardware do you have now and what are your upgrade plans?

I currently have a 980ti and it would be a mistake to go for the 1080 when Big Pascal is right around the corner.

Though currently I'm thinking about just getting my new PC now and the GPU later because I desperately need a CPU upgrade.

In Canada, its 75 dollars cheaper than a 970 so no. We will see when the 1060 as well as the 480 AIB card releases tho

Big Pascal is 1080 Titanium right, just like big Maxwell was 980Ti and not GTX 980, right? When do u think we'll see it? Perhaips u said already.

So what CPU do u have?

I read recently that AMD has acknowledged some of the heat and power issues and have attributed to a premature driver. They are working on a update. Also, If I'm not mistaken the RX 480 is the best rated price to performance.

Just trying to give AMD a break. I'd agree that there was some misleading advertisement (and rumors didn't help it either) as I expected it to be a R9 390/GTX 970 equivalent for $240. We can say this is not the case for now. Let's see if AMD can implement some fixes.

I'm building a new PC too. I have been waiting since last year. Thought about and passed on CPUs and GPUs over time. I'm looking for something solid for 1440p around $300 (GPU); I'm sill waiting on seeing what Zen offers. What a waiting game...
