Forums - Gaming Discussion - When do we get M.2 drives?

Ok, this may sound weird but contrary to all the hoopla over TFs and whatnot; whats really at the top of my wishlist is an nvme m.2 drive support in these new upcoming revisions.

I personally think it would make the single biggest difference in how we experince our games.

For those that don't know, an nvme m.2 drive allows data trasfer speeds of up to 2.5GB/s. But realistically lets peg it down to 1.5GB/s.

Thats over a 10 times jump in data transfer rates from what we hsve in the current consoles today. If you ever waited for 1min for a game to load before, with a drive like that you will be waiting for no more than 6 seconds. And it would literally bring an end to loading screens as we know.

i know m.2 drives are still on the pricey side, especially the nvme variants, but i hope they at least give us the option to be able to throw one into those consoles.

Any chance of something like this happenning? Maybe we should start a twitter campaign or something.

Maybe on the next gen, but they should do 2 skus out of the gate, one with lots of terabytes mechanical cheap version and one with ssd, fewer terabytes but much faster premium version. I would buy the one with ssd. It would be a difficult to handle marketing campaign, but most people would get it after a while.

My motherboard on PC supports NVMe m.2 ssd drives. And is 4K and with VR.

If you are spending money on Nvme m.2, might as well scrap the console and go full master race.

Errrrr..... no. I'm sure if we had this conversation 10yrs ago and i was talkung about 2.5" SSDs you would prpbably hsve daid the same thing. I just saw a 480GB m.2 drive for $120 although its using a sata 6Gbit interface. So that will onoy peak at 500MB/s.

Point is, I'm surr by this time next year we could have nvme drives for just as much and in 3yrs we probably won't really be talking about 2.5" drives anymore.

I just wish they at least support it, they don't hsbe to put in the drive, just give ur the interface so we have the option.

SATA3 and an SSD is more than enough for current games. I'm not sure but the consoles may already feature SATA3.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Nope, PS4 and Xbox One are still limited with SATA2. I hope that changes with Xbox One S and PS Neo.
