Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sony: Xbox/Windows 10 Unification Won't Affect Our Strategy

“I always hesitate to be drawn into discussions on someone else’s strategy. I’m more than happy to talk about our own strategy…Yes, there was a big emphasis from the folks at Microsoft on Xbox and PC cross-play. It remains to be seen whether there is latent large consumer demand for that.

But we don’t see it as really effecting or prompting any change in our thought process or strategy. We have always tended to believe that a proprietary ecosystem offering a very well crafted unified client experience is the way to go, and that sort of remains our strategy.

Crossplay between XBox 1, PC, and PS4 sounds great but for some reason, Sony doesn't seem interested.

Sony already offers PC cross play. Has since before MS did actually, as far as I'm aware.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

One of the biggest reasons people buy one console over another is the fact the majority of their friends play on that console. The ONLY reason MS have put this forward as a possibility is because they want to look like the good guy. Do you really think Sony would want to throw away a huge advantage like that? Did MS last generation or the generation before?

Sony is doing the right thing.

Sony just needs to keep on doing what they're doing. They see how Apple does it, and want some of that action. Can't say I blame them either as I think that, from a business perspective, that's the best place to be

Doing the right thing as far as their sales are concerned but crossplay offers bigger player pools to the benefit of the players.

And removes the reason for someone on LIVE to pay for PS+

Microsoft is being smart by combining windows 10 and xbox one together. This will increase their chances of success. Not only this, but by creating consoles without generations, this means xbox will never start at 0 when we begin each generation. This will pretty much guranantee Microsoft video game support for a very long time. Which is all they need to to stay relevant.
