Forums - Sony Discussion - Playstation: 21 Million PS+ Subscribers

That's pretty good. I remember reading it was only around 2m during the PS3 days, so it's increased significantly since then.

As much as I hate the forced PS+, I understand it is something they had to do. They have done an outstanding job making PSN extremly stable. It is night and day compared to the PS3 days. This had to be done to go head to head with Microsoft in online gaming, and it has made the brand much stronger.

Now I just wish they would bring back something like PlayStation Home for PS4. Perhapps, that could be the ultimate VR alternate world experience.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

I know the media apps are not locked behind a paywall. Still I have a hard time understanding why only 50% of PS4 owner have a PS+ Membership.

Both Vita and PS3 have free online play though. Hence, without paid online play on PS4 these numbers would be a fraction.

Frankly, its a great number of subscribers and this is why Sony chose to charge for online play. Its probably the most profitable part of having a console these day.

Sure, but that still means more than half of the ps4 install base never plays online multiplayer. Single and local multiplayer are still the biggest target audience. Actually I have ps+ and the last time I played online, erm, dark souls 2 I think. That was on ps3. Ah, I played Journey again on ps4 and saw someone else around!

You don't need ps+ in order to meet others players in Journey  (I tested it on PS4)

Good for them but I will always stand by the original model of using online multiplayer as an incentive to buy your brand. Yes, PS4 is killing it, but think how much more dominant they'd be right now if they kept it free. We'd probably see the PS4 dethrone PS2.

The PS4 is dethroning the PS2 in profit. And no, the PS4 wouldn't outsell the PS2 even if multiplayer was free.

I imagine charaging for online play is incredibly profitable with no significant work needed to be done. Which is why they got in that business.

Even if you don't play online much its still great for PS+ games. But its online players that keep that service so profitable. As its known there were relatively few subscirbers before PS4.

case in point they have NBA2K16 free right now.... I almost went out and bought that..... That alone damn near pays for the PS+ for this year getting that.

I've had PS+ for about 4 or 5 years now, and i never play online multiplayer. I just have PS+ for the free games every month.

Pretty much the same as this myself, long before I had a ps4 I had it for the PS3/Vita games each month, then once the PS4 started to list games under the IGC I was adding those to my library on the PSN site long before buying a PS4, that way when I did get the console I also had about 20-30 games ready to install right off the bat from my IGC, was awesome getting a system and already having a backlog of games for it.

This notion which is thrown around that no one likes psn+ games is shocking to me that anyone would even hope that people believe it for a second.

So is PS+ bigger than Xbox Live now? If not it will be very soon, As many PS+ subscribers as people that actually own a XBO I doubt there's gonna be many people with a Live subscription for just the 360.

NBA2k16 is listed on the EU store at €69.99, that alone is actually €20 more than a whole year sub to psn+, the extra 71 games this year can be considered as a bonus... and ya know, online play, store discounts and that extra €20 that you would have to pay to get the NBA game over the price of 12 months of PSN+
