Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony: Devs now seeing key to PSP success

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=185556

The PSP has been out since 2005, but developers are only now beginning to realise what makes a good game for PSP, admits the PSP marketing boss.

Talking of the recent good fortunes for PSP, Sony's John Koller said: "developers and publishers are now just starting to see what the keys to success are on the PSP.

"It's not like the console world at all, and it's something we've been preaching for a while," he added, pointing to key franchises such as God of War and Daxter appearing on the handheld in unique, handheld-specific incarnations.

The key is "making a unique game under that umbrella and making it creative and have it be something that you can't play on console", explained Koller.

"One thing we've noticed is that about 1 in 2, about 50% of consumers, are using the PSP at home. And if they are then... they don't want to buy the same console game that they play on a handheld.

"So, to avoid that kind of competitive play, a lot of developers and publishers are starting to say, 'all right, maybe it's time we start making games that are unique to that system under a strong umbrella'", he told IGN.

Koller also teased about a number of "key" and "expansionary" PSP announcements to come soon. "We have a number of key announcements that'll be made in the next few months that'll be kind of expansionary in what the PSP can do."

Maybe if they want to keep these PSP experiences unique for those to play at home, they should stop porting every major release to the most popular console of all time.

Wow.  They're just a little slow on the uptake.

Still, this means that the PSP might be seeing more casual games.  That's great right?

@ONY--i dont get what you are trying to say here

@ mesoteto
A lot of PSP exclusives get ported to PS2 anyways.

Wow... to think that they are just now getting around to figuring this out... Nintendo had this figured out long time ago with Nintendogs, and before that even. Nintendogs was simply the first game to bring it all together. Now since devs on the PSP understand that the handheld market is fundamentally different than the console market will the PSP gain some marketshare back from the DS?

I think the main thing Sony need to do it make the PSP much more hackproof... Once this is done (if possible) then software sales will have to increase as the games can no longer be played without having the real copy!

This will be a must for the PSP2 anyway, as they cannot afford to loose so much sales to hackers a 2nd time!

A lot of the damage has already been done at this point.  Working on making it more hackproof would likely be throwing good money after bad depending on how long they want to keep the firmware going (likely only until the next serious hardware iteration).

Well Im really excited to see what will be the new big game announcements for the PSP ... or even big news , if its not gaming-related :)
