Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Miyamoto: Nintendo Waiting to Reveal NX Because of "Idea"

Probably too late, though I hope it's not VR..

If it's VR then the NX is stillborn because VR would make the NX too expensive to be successful at the scale that Nintendo is anticipating.

Why people mentioning VR? Didn't Reggie or someone said that they would wait for VR to be popular?

Pocky Lover Boy!

I just hope it's a good idea this time.

My guess is that's a "new" controller setup they're working on like how did the controllers for the wii, wii u, N64 and gamecube.

Also, interesting that he said it's not just a matter of 'advancements' in technology. Does this confirm that the NX won't be just a more powerful, 'traditional' console?

That is certain, they several time said that RX is new concept and just upgrade to Wii U or 3DS.

They may as well go with a gimmick focused console at this point, they simply can't compete with Neo/Scorpio on power so that opening is basically closed to them.

I just hope the chipset isn't a complete piece of crap like the Wii was. Gimme 1 TFLOP + 4GB of RAM (which is freaking low) and I'll be OK, that's at least a decent upgrade over the Wii U.

Whatever the gimmick is it better be something spectacular and easy to understand.

I really don't see NX being less powerful than XB1, and if have only 4GB of RAM that means that only 2-3GB RAM would free for developers and that's much more less than XB1/PS4 have, so that again would very inferior XB1/PS4 ports. Also RAM is today very cheap.

So another gimmicky console? This is bullshit Nintendo!
I just hope the new idea is a good one that lasts. Not a novelty that wears off within a year.

The real reason Nintendo can't compete with specs even with having the best first party games is because after the 90's Nintendo forgot Marketing 101. Using propaganda and fancy bullshit on the gamers to get their consoles and games. They rocked that in the 90's and now Sony and Microsoft own it. Marketing is about programing the consumers mind to like attend. Right now gamers are programed to like graphics and stuff.

Kind of like how Apple tries to program consumers to spend $600 to jack off on a new shiny white phone every year.

How can be bullshit if you don't know what that idea or new concept is!?

Offcourse Nintendo can complete with specs, but they choice not to, Sony and MS are fighting with specs while Nintendo trying to do something difrent. Imagine if NX would try to compete with specs with PS4 Neo and XB Scorpio, NX would need to have price point of around $500, and $500 Nintendo console in middle of generation means that would sell less than Wii U actualy sold.

You never know with Nintendo, 1GB for the OS would leave 3GB for the games, even in that case, it's a nice sized upgrade over the Wii U.

It's quite possible whatever new "gimmick" they have will swallow up a good chunk of the hardware budget too. I just can't really envision a simple plastic controller radically altering the market again, they'll need something bigger than that.

The thing about NOA during the Howard Lincoln years was that they at least tried to market to everyone while still emphasizing kids and families.  Modern NOA seems like they're eternally trying to recapture the casual market while almost exclusively marketing to children and maintaining some self-created ideal as the Disney of video games.

NOA definitely did a much better job of catering to the "core" gamers back in the 90s compared to today. Under Howard Lincoln, NOA was aggressive and proactive; they spearheaded partnerships with Rare, Retro Studios, EA, etc, and worked genuinely hard to bring the kind of games that would sell to an adult Western audience. The NOA of today is a shadow of its former self, a sock puppet with little real power and none of the punch they packed back in the 4th and 5th gen.

If they relly want XB1/PS4 ports (and I think they want because they know they can't have successful console without 3rd party), they need at least power of XB1. Wii U had 1GB RAM reserved for OS, so we can assume that NX will have at least 1.5GB for OS, and 2.5GB RAM is definatly too low for easy XB1/PS4 ports and most likly 900/1080p resolution.

I dont think they will go for expensive gimmick again after Wii U. In 2017. they can easily have console with some kind of gimmick, power of at least XB1 (most likly around PS4) with price point of $299 and to have profit on each sold unit.

I've lowered my expectations for Nintendo hardware, the Wii U could've had a much, much better GPU and they chose something relatively weak then too.

I'd be OK with 1 TFLOP + 4-5GB of RAM, I don't think third parties are going to sell a lot of games on the NX anyway. Hardware power is only about half the equation, the other half is Nintendo doesn't have any of the demographics that buy the bigger selling third party software, and somehow I doubt the Grand Theft Auto or Madden NFL crowd is going to make a Nintendo system flooded with Disney-styled cartoony mascot games and Amiibo toys their go to system.
