Forums - Gaming Discussion - Should consoles cost $500+ ?

There should be an option for the enthusiasts to buy more expensive consoles for better graphics and performance, but only as a mid gen upgrade. And everyone should start with the same base console, because it is new and the most powerful console at the time of launch. An "enthusiast edition" on day 1 doesn't make sense and is still gonna be outdated by year 3-4.

Unless the console gives me a blowjob no.

Well actualy there's nothing wrong with having an expansive console on the market if there's a cheaper version of it, having the choice to pay for different prices depending on the features the consoles have is nice.

NNID/PSN: Kung_Kjartan

yes if it gives you the performance for this price

If the market will bear it, sure.

I've yet to pay more than $300 for a video game system and I'm unsure I ever will, but it's good that there are premium products out there for those who can afford them.

No they should not.

The fact that they are only here for a fixed amount of time means they should cost accordingly.

If this is about NEO/Scorpio then no, it's not a problem. you can buy the ps4/xb1.

If a new generation console launches at $600 then it is a problem because there is no alternative.

It is about those consoles!

I like gaming and I actually spend way too much for them but for the most part, they've always been cheap enough to be an impulse buy.  Then, the PS3 launched at $600 (for the high end console). Later I got an XBO for $500.  That's a little outside of the realm of "I've got a little extra in my pocket. Sure, why not?"

It just seems like gaming is slowly creeping beyond the realm of a hobby anyone can enjoy and becoming something much more. Toss in the barrier of paid internet and the obligation to stay connected and I can see many people who loved gaming being left out in the cold.

Even now, I have family that haven't even been able to scrape up ps4 money, even though they'd love one.

Have you thought of buying one to them? (since I know you're a generous guy with good income)

Wait, we have a choice in this?

PC GAMING: BEST GAMES. WORST CONTROLS

A mouse & keyboard are made for sending email and typing internet badassery. Not for playing video games!!!

Depends, if the value is there why not? It annoys me how people don't mind paying 600 plus for an iPhone every year but think it's ridiculous paying more than 600 on a console every 5+ years.......

Yes and no. If the console is at the start of the generation and it is the only one you can buy, then heck no. We saw both with the ps3 and even the x1 @ launch that it had a negative impact on the sales.

If its this iterative formula where u have a console that is priced at $300 and $500+ then maybe. I have already said my concerns about optimization with framerate and if third party devs really do screw over the $300 console owners with laughable framerates, then I really don't like the idea of having multiple consoles at multiple price points. Cause if my fears do come true, it means that developing for multiple consoles puts enough strain on the devs that the old console owners get screwed. I am not talking about graphics btw, but about framerate since we already see many games chugging on the ps4/x1.

With PC, its a less of an issue imo. And the reason is that my old arse PC with upgraded GPU which I bought at the start of the generation can do 1080p 60fps for almost all games. That leaves me quite a headroom to go down as my hardware ages and PC games do have settings you can adjust and mods that can help fix developer's nonsense. And we can already see that with dx12, the cpu is becoming less of a bottleneck and a less of a component to upgrade in order to gain performance for games. And same goes for a lot of the components on the PC.

Consoles do not have that headroom and they will solely rely on the devs to be able to optimize their games for it but with the launch of Neo and Scorpio, devs will have to optimize for 5 platforms with quite a difference in performance. Of course, they can choose to develop for the x1/ps4 as their lead console but I am pretty sure Sony and MS would rather push devs to develop for the newer hardware so they can push the sales.

So TLDR: If Devs don't screw over the weaker consoles, sure, go ahead with different price points but if they do than no thanks.

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

I personally think 399$ is the sweet spot, any higher is too much.
