Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reggie Defends Motion Controls in Youtube Video

I find that my personal preferences more often than not tend to run contrary to what is commericially popular. The Wii was one of the unusual instances where the two coincided.

I figured. I would imagine it being it frustrating that the industry moves against you. But you can't just ignore the shift

Thankfully even if the mainstream abandons something you're into, you can usually still find it in niche circles. For instance, games like Splatoon and Fatal Frame continue to offer motion controls this gen, and similarly even when slow-burn horror games fell out of favour with most big publishers last gen, there were still lower profile examples to enjoy.

The games don't infuriate people, the controls do. Likewise, ever notice how the games that made the best use of motion controls are all single player?

This is because lag and precision become significantly worse when using motion controls. This is why games like call of duty were able to thrive on the PS3 despite the wii having the bigger install base.

In fact, I don't know of a single notable wii game that's big within the esports community. Is it really worth it to craft "new" experiences at the expense of the esports community?

I've always purchased COD on Wii/Wii U over Xbox/Playstation myself, because pointer aiming just feels so much better. Going back to dual analogue FPS controls now feels to me like steering a jet fighter with one of these:

I feel exactly the same for FPS controls!! I tried but it feels so boring with a normal controller now :S

of course we are in the very minority

motion controls are so immersing if used right, and in my opinion, WiiU would be more popular if the default controller was a new technology Wii-mote and nunchuck, and the gamepad a kind of accessory

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

I saw that video. I was more shocked that Matpat managed to not only get Reggie on board with this, but even debate. That was awesome to watch, although it did sound a bit PR-y xD I liked the motion control in SS. My main issue was revisiting old areas and a lack of an overworld in the sky. Compared to Wind Waker, it was very lack luster.

Yeah, it did sound very very scripted and rehearsed a lot, I guess they would have to do that because he wouldn't just agree to go on with someone without first discussing all of the stuff which is obviously off limits such as talk about the NX or mentioning the words Star, Fox or Zero to just win the argument outright, Take Lylat wars, make it look beautiful, destroy it with controls which are just a barrier to playing.

And he should. It was a product that sold really well. However, it has worn out its stay and should be put to death unless it's used very well in VR. I personally had no issues with Skyward Sword at all. It was a really enjoyable experience. I still can't believe Reggie actually decided to be on a Game Theory video. Talk about Nintendo breaking the ice.

How upset you think the creator will be when he sees a monetization claim on the video by Nintendo because it includes graphics from their games in it at points as well as SFX.

Well implemented motion controls can deliver a kind of immersion and tactile enjoyment that traditional controls simply aren't capable of, in my opinion.

Well said, my dude.

Playing Metroid Prime 3, Wii Sports Resort, and Skyward Sword with motion controls were some of my best and most rewarding experiences last gen.

This is MatPat. It's not his first Nintendo video. He knows the rules already.

Motion controls can be way more fun than regular controls, but it depends on the game and the implementation. Some may like it, some may hate it, but I appreciate that Nintendo trys to innovate gaming. Their influence is highly necessary for the whole industry. I would even go that far to claim that the recent VR buzz wouldn't be happening at all if it wasn't for Nintendo and their attempt to integrate motion into gaming, as well as broaden the understanding of how to play a game.

I include esports because (and this will answer you first comment) a console maker will really focus on one control scheme for the generation. Don't get me wrong, I would love having multiple options. But including both control schemes to a consoles box either increases the cost by $50 or the console maker takes big loses. It simply won't happen (As exhibited by the kinect 2.0 drop from the xbox one). A platform holder must focus on one control scheme.

Not when that control scheme is a seperate product as is the case for Wii (Gamecube/Classic Controller) and Wii U (Wiimotes). While motion controls should never be mandatory over superior traditional controls, there's no harm having them as an option for the few who like them. I half expect the NX to be compatible with the Wii U Gamepad/Pro Controller and Wiimotes since there's not really a reason not to. If people really want to play Mario Kart with a Wii Wheel, let em!

Yeah, it does kind of seem that way. I didn't expect Reggie to know as much as he said on the video. Maybe he looked all that stuff up before doing the video, or maybe he legit knows the stuff, I dunno, haha... I figure something like Star Fox Zero didn't show up because the focus was on Zelda and motion controls and doesn't really fit the main topic. If it was about the Wii U and the gamepad, I think that would be one of the 1st counter arguements to be made against the gamepad.

Does this mean that the Nintendo PR machine is ramping up toward full throttle? Interesting.

Of course, that probably means we're about to see and hear a LOT more from Reggie, which isn't something I look forward to.

It's not just Reggie from Nintendo either. Miyamoto and the hosts of Nintendo Minute have gotten involved with other youtubers, as well as some people from Gamefreak. It's interesting that despite their really weird policies with youtube, people from Nintendo is getting quite involved with youtubers. I never expected that to happen. I wouldn't think youtubers would be worthwhile for Nintendo to get involved with. I wonder if other people from the industry do the same. I only know Shuuhei has done a little bit of this.
