Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reggie Defends Motion Controls in Youtube Video

So Reggie appeared on MatPat's Youtube series DeadLock. In it, he and MatPat debate whether motion controls or traditional controls are better. See below:

I'm sure this will go over just fine with fans!

I mean if the motion controls are implemented well then I don't have much of a problem with them. If they are mandatory and shotty then that's when it becomes an issue to me.

Well implemented motion controls can deliver a kind of immersion and tactile enjoyment that traditional controls simply aren't capable of, in my opinion.

I loved it for skyward sword and basically nothing else.

Motion controls are great in games like Metroid Prime, The Conduit, Goldeneye 007, Pikmin, Mario Galaxy and many more. I don't care if they are mandatory or not. It's the designer's choice. I think a lot of people rag on them when they have never played the Wii family games or any of the titles that I mentioned. Too many people bashed the controls and rode the bandwagon of trashing the Wii because it sold better than other systems or because there was a ton of shovelware/dumpware produced by non reputable companies trying to cash in. The Wii is the best game system for a variety of titles as long as you don't mind not having HD. I play classic Genesis and SNES games so I really just care about quality titles rather than the same thing everyone else is playing, just on my system.

Traditional controller all the way. The only motion game that I enjoy was tennis in sports champions.

I saw that video. I was more shocked that Matpat managed to not only get Reggie on board with this, but even debate. That was awesome to watch, although it did sound a bit PR-y xD I liked the motion control in SS. My main issue was revisiting old areas and a lack of an overworld in the sky. Compared to Wind Waker, it was very lack luster.

It depends on the game. Done right (Super Mario Galaxy, SOCOM 4) it can really enhance the experience. Done poorly, it can get a bit cumbersome. It's worth noting that not many developers bothered to try anything with motion control on any system.

And he should. It was a product that sold really well. However, it has worn out its stay and should be put to death unless it's used very well in VR. I personally had no issues with Skyward Sword at all. It was a really enjoyable experience. I still can't believe Reggie actually decided to be on a Game Theory video. Talk about Nintendo breaking the ice.

Much like VR, motion controls excell in certain games and are not really viable in others. Standard controllers and other setups are "jack of all trades, master of none" setups.  Motion controls and VR interfaces are masters of few. With motion controls, some games are, in my frank opinion, are hands down and inarguably better for their motion controls. Metroid Prime Trilogy has far better flow and control than Prime 1 or 2.  Other games aren't necessarily better than contemporaries but are certainly very good on their own merrits. Skyward Sword comes to mind. But other games just don't work. Twitchy games that require rapid turning and aiming, like CoD, have never done well with motion controls.  JRPGs really don't have any sensible way you implement them except in suplemental systems. Those are just a few examples.  In short, certain games when designed from the ground up for motion controls are better for it. But it can't be used for everything. Which is where motion controls falter in the gaming space the most: a motion control-based console is kinda impractical because a console is by definition a jack of all trades proposition yet motion controls are specialized.
