Forums - Politics Discussion - WOW! In 8 hours people have become experts in global finance and economics. Lets talk facts.

People don't have a clue really. They think they are changing things and that they are, but they forgot to think is to gain from all this.

House prices will fall, shops will close down etc and guess what... rich foreigners will snap them up JUST like they did with the last recession.

Several parts of London / greater London are completely owned by foreign money. (Brentford = Polish) (Ealing = Russian.)

Its only going to get worse now. People wanted independence but the UK economy is entirely dependent on imports and foreign investors. Thats all going to disappear soon.

Without a good deal, according to the Belgian financial planning bureau, we could lose 2.6% GDP in the next year, which will be caught by a measly 1.5% growth...

Trade

16% of ALL goods exported from the EU come to the UK.  The UK is THE biggest single market for goods from the EU.  Bigger than the USA.

In summary, the UK imports £219bn worth of good from the EU and exports £133bn worth of goods to the EU.  So we import £85bn more from the EU than we export.  The EU countries will want to close of an export market worth £219bn?  Thats a ridiculous notion.

From the site of your own government (hopefully it's reliable enoughfor you, no matter the quite dumb choice of its PM lately): https://www.eureferendum.gov.uk/q-and-a/trade/

Doesn’t the EU need us more than we need them?

No. A much higher proportion of UK exports go to the EU than EU exports come to the UK. The EU is the destination of 44% of the UK’s goods and services exports, but the UK is the destination of only 8% of the EU’s exports.

As a result, EU exports to the UK are worth 3% of EU GDP, while UK exports to the EU are worth 13% of UK GDP – four times more. Also, almost half of all of our foreign investment comes from the EU.

Maybe if the English voters cared to get some information before blindly vote on the base of nationalism and the size of bananas there would be less confusion.

This is true and gives the EU a bit of negotiating strength. The OP is correct, both the EU and the UK will suffer, the UK will simply suffer more vs the collective EU because of the numbers stated in your post.

OT: Economically, that's all true but the leaders are going to have to balance the economic reasons for giving the UK a good deal with the political problems that will now arise with independence and far-right parties looking to capitalise on Brexit with their own push to leave.

They at the very least need to make it look like Britain gets the short-end of the stick.

Markets fluctuate on a daily basis and the market will bounce back and recover these losses. Britain has gained freedom and independence from the EU!

Kowen, should I be worried about Turkey joining the EU?

Does the UK exist make the EU look for a new "net contributor"?

The idea of a country that's moving away from secularism and toward religious fundamentalism joining the EU scares me.

To join the EU all member states need to unanimously agree right?

IIRC France are one of the largest opponents to Turkey joining, so it seems unlikely as long as they are still in it.

Well, after the UK leaves the remaining 7 "net contributors" will be strained harder. That includes France.

And 20 EU "net benefiters" memebers will welcome a new "net contributor" to fill the void regardless of the differences.

I am sure it's not that simple and I'd like to hear what Kowen, and others, have to say.

I might be no expert in economics but I'm an expert in gorging myself which makes me question why there hasn't been a vote for getting real Cadbury chocolate to America. You, people, need to forget all this finances nonsense and deal with real world problems.

Turkey won't be joining for a long time, although I do expect them to join eventually - maybe after 10 years or after their government changes.
