It's been known for a while that their original plan was to cooperate with Sony by making the OS for the console while Sony made the hardware, however Sony didn't want to. Didn't know Nintendo received the same offer though.

Wonder who they went to first with a partnership deal. That's interesting to know.

Probably Sony. The way that MS deals with their gaming division aligns a lot closer to Sony than Nintendo. Hard to say for sure, as Nintendo rakes in big $$$ for their intellectual property, something that other publisher/developers could only dream of.

seems like the guy in the interview explicitly seems to suggest that they went to Nintendo first and then later Sony

I think that has more to do with the fact that the question he was asked was specifically about Nintendo.

5th gen: Sony went to Nintendo and Sega: said no
6th gen: MS went to Sony and Nintendo: said no

In the end the industry was much better for it, PS1 kicking ass, Xbox bringing new things

Only thing I still wanna see is Sega partnering with Apple on a console.

Most deffinatly. SOny just surprised everyone with the PS and they were still pretty valuable as a company. I guess they taught that they might have a bigger influence if they partnered with Nintendo than they would have partnering up with Sony.

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

It makes sense for MS to go first to Nintendo, Nintendo is basically right across the street in Redmond, Washington, a partnership would've been very convenient for MS.

Nintendo should have accepted the deal. Who cares if you have to run Windows OS or whatever. It makes no difference when the game is being played, and MS could've handled the online stuff, again that's something that wouldn't hurt Nintendo.

Instead by making enemies out of both Sony and MS, Nintendo effectively locked themselves out of their own house.

It get's a little more complicated 6th gen Microsoft made the operations system for Sega's Dreamcast.  It was a total partnership.  And when the Dreamcast died, and Sega as a hardware manufacture.  Microsoft decided to make the Xbox.

"REDMOND, Wash., May 21, 1998 — Microsoft Corp. today announced it will collaborate with Sega Enterprises Ltd. on Sega’s new Dreamcast home video game system, slated for release in Japan on Nov. 20, 1998, and in the rest of the world in 1999. As a result of the collaboration, Microsoft will provide an optimized version of the Microsoft® Windows® CE operating system with integrated DirectX® services as the operating system for use with Dreamcast."

Apple aready made a console The Pippin.  While it's arguable better than the Ouya,  it had 34 times few games.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.
