Forums - Gaming Discussion - Tencent Purchases Clash of Clans Dev Supercell for $8.6 Billion

http://www.vgchartz.com/article/264782/tencent-purchases-clash-of-clans-dev-supercell-for-86-billion

Very risky with these 1 hit wonder mobile companies. Doubt they will ever get their money back, Supercell made $930M profit last year, $950M in 2014. They'd need to remain another 8-9 years at the top spot for Tencent to get their money back, and we know with mobile devs they usually crash and burn once they're out of fashion and the masses move on to the next big thing, which happens every few years.

Mobile market changes very rapidly. I wonder if supercell will keep doing wonders. Clash Royale and CoC is successful, but I wonder how long it'll stay like that?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

Except Supercell's Clash Royale is the next big thing
These guys aren't 1 hit wonders and their Clash IP is clearly a major player in the mobile market.
This honestly looks to be quite a smart long term investment on Tencents part.

Risky indeed, they obviously have some master plan.

For those who are interested in learning more, I actually did quite a long write up on this deal and the implications for all involve.

Should help people understand the two companies and what the benefits/risks of this deal are.

Very interesting to see what will happen with these games and what Tencent will do next

That money could've bought Konami, Capcom and Sega combined!

They most certainly are not "one hit wonders"

Clash of Clans has been absolutely massive since it came out and shows no sign of slowing down as long as they continue to support it.

Hay Day is far less popular but for sure it has done very well for itself.

Boom Beach is nowhere near Clash of Clans but it is also still very popular and definitely a money maker

And their most recent, Clash Royale has been a huge hit and will most likely continue to be so.

So they've developed 4 games, and rest assured they have made a lot of profit on each of them and all 4 of them have been at least quite popular. Very few developers have such a good track record. Even though it's a massive sum of money, it's not all that risky. I would say far less risky than a good few acquisitions that we've seen over the years.

These types of moblie games are disgusting, and thankfully this deal and ten cent apparently being the biggest player in gaming doesn't concern us. Mobile gaming and traditional gaming are totally separate worlds.

I had no idea Tencent had that kind of money.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Tell me a funny joke!
