Even using the top image, that's way, way more than 40% smaller by volume. It appears to be 60-70% smaller (again, by volume, not sure what metric they're using)

Talking originals

XB1 is much bigger than the X360
PS4 is much smaller than the PS3

Wii U is about the same size as a Wii in every way, just more rounded. That's part of the reason why a lot of people mistook the Wii U for a new Wii controller.
