Forums - Gaming Discussion - Spencer/Microsoft flip-flopping on Scorpio already....

This is just PR talk. Look, this is what he is really saying over the quotes he's given us.

Scorpio is a 4k console that will support xbox one games. We don't want you to think of it as a completely new console, because that's unfair to all the people that bought xb1. Instead, think of it as a 4k xb1. However, we're going to leave it up to the developers what they want to do with the upgrade in power. They could either just make 4k xb1 games, or they could treat it as a completely new console with exclusives you won't find on xb1. We're not the ones calling it changing of the guard, we'll let the other devs do that so that we don't look like the bad guys here.

ie; scorpio has the power to run games in 4k. Think of scorpio as a 4k console. However, remember that not everything will be 4k. Some developers will rather put the graphics power into some other aspect of the game, like massive scale processing, thousands of enemies onscreen. You can't have both sometimes. So, you should keep buying xb1, and think of scorpio as something you're not ready for yet because you don't have a 4k tv, even though you probably won't need one anyway.

Not a contradiction but it is kind of misleading. The second quote really makes it sound like 4K is going to be the standard for Scorpio.

Someone gets it.

Creating a thread and then implying that everybody who disagree with you (which is the majority) does not "get" it is not really the best way to get started.

Like many said, is it not a contradiction. The second quote may let you believe that EVERYTHING will be in 4k but it does not says that. Just that it will become the standard and Scorpio will be more than capable of it. It is like the Play Station Four aiming for all games in 1080p/60FPS. The console is the most capable of the 2 for that but it does not mean that all games can/needs to achieve that.

Actually, I would prefer dev. to use the Scorpio power to give me more details/objects/particules/rendering distance in my games than upping the resolution to be honest but we will see.

Read on its own, maybe. But I do see those two quotes as being complete contradictions really. I see them as conflictin statements. One says you will see no benefit from the Scorpio if you don't have a 4K TV and the other strongly implies that is will be possible to see benefit even with a 1080P TV. We will find out in time though.

People already have pointed out how this works. I'll try to explain it with logic connectors:

Phil Spencer said Console A will be able to play X games and you need X Televisions to fully grasp at them. Those who don't have X televisions won't enjoy the full potential of X games.

At the same time, Phil Spencer admits that X games aren't being enforced, and the developers can make Y games if they want. Y Games can be enjoyed in both X Televisions and Y Televisions. If you get a X Game, though, Y Television won't be able to fully grasp its potential.

X Games can only be enjoyed in X televisions (4K ones)

Y Games (When the developer don't work in 4K) can be enjoyed in both X and Y televisions.

Scorpio won't enforce developers to create X Games only. Meaning you won't need an X Television to fully enjoy All scorpio games, but Some.

I understand that, but he did mention “Scorpio is designed as a 4K console" in the initial quote which threw quite a few people off when he made it. That alongside the "no benefit without a 4K tv' made it sound like "You need X TV to fully enjoy all Scorpio games" when the quote was made.

But I already explained how this really works. Nintendo DS was designed as a dual-screen handheld with a touchpad functionality. Not all games used either the dual-screen or the touchpad; same with Scorpio and 4K in this case.

I don't see it as a contradiction since at E3, Phil Spencer never said that 4k would be a mandate. All he said is the console would be capable of 4k gaming.

They designed it with 4K in mind, but it's not mandatory for game devs to make games in 4k, see those 900p games upscaled to 1080p in a lot of games? oh right.....

Well, Sony did get sued for that.

People will sue big companies or the government for anything retarded these days, nothing we can do about that lol.

Well, I wouldn't expect better from him. Will say whatever he needs to get what he wants.

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

I do not see a contradiction here. It looks like Phil is trying to clarify some of the confusion discussed during his initial quote. The Scorpio is designed with 4K in mind but will work just fine on a 1080p television.

When I first purchased my 360 all I had was a standard definition television. It still worked and looked great, but it was not in high definition. This is the same concept. You can use the Scorpio with you 1080p television you just wont have the advantages of 4K resolution and upscaling.

Designing for a benefit and forcing others to use that design choice are two different things. No contradiction here.
