Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Opinion: Gears 4 And Scalebound Don't Look Too Good

Gears 4 was up there as one of the better looking games at E3.

Scalebound did look a bit stylistically crowded and underwhelming.
Pretty uncharacteristic of Platinum.

Not that I can see from the gameplay from e3. Gears 4 gives off the same feel as Gears 1. UC4 is also a major overhaul from the way the game is presented, it's actually twice as long as the other UC games, the pacing is different and you now can choose to play rambo or go stealthy.

In Gears 4, players can now reach over an enemy's cover and yank them over to kill them, and the mantle kick (which itself wasn't introduced until Gears 3) has been redesigned so that you can run, vault over an enemy's cover without stopping, kick them in the process, and transition to a melee kill.  You can use this to vault over unoccupied cover without having to slow down/stop.

So like UC4, Gears 4 expands on the gameplay of prior entries while sticking to the same core formula. Both games tweak the specifics, but neither does anything drastically new.

It still looks like Gears 1 to me, your character moves like Marcus from the first game, you go in a area, then go from cover to cover popping out locusts the same way you did in 1, the shooting looks the same from Gears 1 with the same reticul, same weight. Due to the open level design, the shoot outs play very differently in UC4, enemies now flank you, or you can flank them, your covers get destroyed, you have to move constantly. Hell, there's heavy recoil to the guns now forcing you to play differently. The previous games were stationary, you wait in a cover, pop baddies, then the second wave comes behind you etc. Gears still looks like this to me.

And Uncharted 4 still looks like Uncharted 1 to me. Both have been mechanically tweaked and expanded upon over the years but at their core, both are essentially 2007 games with a shinier coat of paint.

I feel like I'm the only one who likes Drew's cringe. I feel like his character is just the type of character to be like that. And I actually like it.

Gears looked great. No complaints. Scalebound looked decent. I need to see more gameplay before I can really judge.

Your looking into this the wrong way. Your talking about the actual genre then the game. No difference with Racing or Sport games. It doesnt have to throw completely new elements at you  (Which Gears 4 does anyway) You play Gears for 2 things. Story and Action. Its not a Tomb Raider/Uncharted game relying on Quick Time events or scripted events. Its all about the gun play which when it comes to 3rd person cover based shooting Gears is on top of the food chain. It doesn't need to change because its already amazing. Gears 1 plays better then The Order and thats a 2014 next gen title. Thats how good the franchise is. The problem i see is that your comparing it to other 3rd person styled games like Uncharted which we all know is a completely different game. Treat Gears of War as more of a Shooter then a action adventure game.

Gears now looks very dated. There seemed to be no scale in the gameplay we experienced and it looks very corridor-bound. Very last gen.

Scalebound similarly looks last gen and very generic TBH.

Nothing in either of these two titles makes me want to get a One.

Looking forward to the Scorpio though.

What are you even arguing about man, also no one is making the point whether it's a well made game or not. Gears 4 still looks like Gears 1 in the gameplay front, UC4 does not and has been an evolution since the first game. That's all there is to it.

The level of "evolution" between UC1 and UC4 and between Gears 1 and 4 looks about the same to me. Both have the same core gameplay, just with the setpieces cranked up a notch and some physics based destruction thrown in.

you obviously havent played Uncharted 4 then.

I dont know about Gears, it's the same dull thing for me.

But yeah Scalebound was pretty disappointing for a game coming from Kamiya
