Sony have to because if they dont. MS will dominate the 4k market with there affordable Slim model.

Im glad MS told there customers and future customers there plans. This doesnt lead to disapointment. I would hate to be that guy who buys a brand new machine only to realise that a bigger and better improved model came out a month later.

I also highly doubt that the Neo will be a $399 console, not if the Slim is roughly around the same price bracket using the same Hardware as before. Unless Sony plan on losing profits on system sales.

If the Neo arrives this year it will be competing against the vastly cheaper X1S which would be more appealing to budget gamers and 4k owners. The Scorpio will not have a rival if its a complete year away.

Ill wait and see.

If neo releases this year, I dont sre it being more than $399. Thats what the original PS4 launched at 3yrs ago.

And this thing you are saying about Neo competing with the XBOs? Thats just flat out wrong. The XBOs will be coming in at $299, its competing with the Base PS4 (which mind you is still even smaller than it), and the XB1 has been cheaper than the PS4 since sometime in 2014, That has never resulted to it selling better than the PS4. Why do you think an XBOs will suddenly start outselling the core PS4 all of a sudden?

The neo arriving this year means its not competing with anyone. And when the scorpio arrives next year, make no mistake it will be competing with the Neo, and then the Neo could be priced as low as $350/$300 to the scorpios $500 (likely the price cause the scorpio is noy just getting a bigger GPU its getting more Ram too).

And about the buying this month then new hardware releasing next month, thats only messed up if the new hardware is cheaper or better but at the same price. If i spend $299 this month cause that was what i could afford, then a newer model of my console comes out at $399 it makes no difference to me.

What Azzanation is saying though is that the XB1 s while for the most part still the xbox one, they have upgraded key components inside that will allow it to play 4k disc, stream 4k content, and if a game supports it, (Gears 4) bump up the resolution of the game. Technically even with the Neo coming out (I think it will be between 450-499) accomplishing the same. General consumers will see that the XB1 s is still going to be the cheapest 4k player on the market. Something that was a bonus to both the PS2 and 3.

MS took a page out of Sony's book, and created a console that will help usher in a new format to the general consumer, at a more bearable price point. Some people might buy the XB1 s just for being a 4k player, and never buy a game. I think this was another reason MS shrunk it down, and gave it a internal power supply, and a IR blaster so it is capable of controlling all their devices (tv, sound system) with a universal remote.

Seriously though, if the cloud had the potiential to push the X1 from 8x X360's to 32x X360s that would be 4x the 1.3teraflops of power inside it bringing it up to 5.2teraflops for the base X1 model, but what became of the power raining from above? Absolutely nothing.

Drivatars was a thing I guess, not sure was there really 3.9 teraflops of power behind the car AI... I'd wager there wasn't.

But yeah, showing this sort of show to Japan with the launch of the X1 there, like... did they not realize exactly which nation they were hoping to fool? Japan had learned about buzzwords with consoles back in the days of BLAST PROCESSING, I guess the megadrive promised HD graphics too though... well... High definition, with no numbers involved to suggest what was low definition.

I guess Sega set the precedent for being able to write any old shite on your console :D

At the time of launch we could say Genesis was High Defition (compared to Famicon, since Master System wasn't that relevant)... There wasn't a HD defined at the time anyway, and of course they didn't really hit SD (that only trully happened with PS2, and nowadays we complain if we don't hit the next top resolution available by each gen)

Oh yeah that was my point, it was High in definition, in the same way that I'm tall compared to my partner... but not compared to a house, if you use a vague term like High it needs a number based to compare it to or you might as well just write "Lovely Definition Graphics" on it, means just as little!

Eh? The slim alters the resolution of games, you mean... upscaling to 4k from 720p/1080p? I don't suppose you have a link to that? Wouldn't mind a read over it to hear the ideas of what that S model brings to the gaming side of things, I had thought it was purely media which got the resolution change. Awesome if some games get nicely stretched up to 4k though if it's done right.

I still think NEO will come out by March-April 2017, and it will have slighty higher specs than the ones we know. My two cents.

If you go to Gamestop website, and look at the details for the XB1 s, in the first asterisk/exception clause I copied this from there.

[*] 4K streaming with select apps, see Xbox.com. HDR functionality available with supported games and TVs. Some apps require app provider-specific subscriptions and/or other requirements. Xbox One Backward Compatibility feature works with select Xbox 360 games, see www.xbox.com/backcompat. Xbox Live and broadband internet required for initial download of game to console. Stand sold separately

I cut this quote from gearsofwar.com

We are proud to announce that Gears of War 4 supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) through the Xbox One S, delivering richer, more luminous colors on HDR-ready TVs.

We'll be showing Gears of War 4 running on the Xbox One S in HDR on the show floor at E3, so expect impressions on Gears of War 4 in HDR to appear throughout the week.

Sorry I meant to say that it supports HDR which deals more with the contrast. I guess the color palatte is greatly improved. I  read somewhere about Sony possibly releasing a smartphone with HDR capability. Xperia X premium I believe it was called.

The Slim doesn't alter the resolution one iota. If anything, it MAY allow for HDRI(High Dynamic Range Imaging) during gameplay but there have been very ambiguous messages about this. But upscaling internally from 720-1080P up to 2160P is not happening outside of the usual upscaling that occurs whenever you connect ANY console up to a HDTV.  If I connect my standard PS4 to a 4K TV, the image is automatically upscaled to 4K but it is not true native 4k. From my limited understanding, it is a hypothesized 2160(4K) image based on whatever the native source materal was(say 1080P if playing a standard blu ray).

Oh right, the HDR function would be in some games, but that isn't an increase of resolution though, it's a seperate thing completely.

It will make them look nicer of course, but yeah in terms of resolution that isn't changed by being HDR or not.

yeah i ended up doing a stealth edit to my response. It has more to do with contrast, and having a wider range of displaying color even to 1080p images. apparently making images even more dynamic. Some are saying that HDR is going to be more important than the resolution of 4k.

Also I mentioned that Sony is getting ready to release a HDR capable smartphone. the Xperia premium X.

Yeah I read that too, about the high quality HDR function TVs looking nicer than just throwing out the image at 4k without a good dynamic range on the image, I guess a low quality picture at 4k is still a low quality image... just a bigger one.

interesting. I wonder how many will be upgrading to 4k sets within a year on this site. personally for me, Im still fine with my 1080p tv. I dont seeing me upgrading for at least 2-3 years. It's low on my list of wants right now. just bought a home, and want to start restoring my 68 California Special more than sit in front of a tv.
