Forums - Sony Discussion - New Dual Shock 4 controller confirmed

As far as I know the DS4 still uses the Bluetooth 2.1 protocol.

There have been A LOT of Bluetooth improvements over the last years. Bluetooth 4.0 - 4.2 only drain a fraction of power, which should improve battery life. For Bluetooth 5 there will be improvements in all areas (power drain, range, speed): http://www.techradar.com/news/networking/bluetooth-5-everything-you-need-to-know-1323060

I really hope that the new DS4-model (transmitter) and the PS Neo (receiver) both support Bluetooth 5 or at least 4.2: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth#Bluetooth_v5

P.S.: Damn, according to the FCC document, it it still Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR? WTF? That is still tech from 2007, which was already a shame when the PS4 released in 2013! Bluetooth 4.0 (aka Bluetooth low energy) is available since 2010: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth#Bluetooth_v4.0

I hope that this is only an enhanced model for PS4 and that the Neo gets a "DS4.5" with newer bluetooth specs.

Yes, it's a shame to keep using such outdated bluetooth technology.    2.1+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) is nasty old crusty tech.

This is definitely to improve battery life, maybe by removing the light bar. I think they could also improve the joysticks a bit, even though the rubber texture of my DS4 joysticks are still intact.

Wish they would have increased battery size, but its same :(

GAMING is not about spending hours to pass/waste our time just for fun,

its a Feeling/Experience about a VIRTUAL WORLD we can never be in real, and realizing some of our dreams (also creating new ones).

So, Feel Emotions, Experience Adventure/Action, Challenge Game, Solve puzzles and Have fun.

PlayStation is about all-round "New experiences" using new IP's to provide great diversity for everyone.

Xbox is always about Online and Shooting.

Nintendo is always about Fun games and milking IP's.

The 5V 800 mA on the FCC tag is referring to the USB power supply, not the battery size. The FCC document shows the 3.65 V battery but does not say how many mA the battery is. So there is still hope for a larger battery.

this could just as easily be a very minor redesign to improve analogue rubber abrasion or battery life or sth

Fucken hate the analogue rubber, I attached one of those pro bullshit because of that.

I hate when happen that, you want to see the actually controler and you see a peaper with letters and numbers :) That not say much is not the first time the model product letters has change
BTW if you break the one side of R1 button you can fix it with plastic pieces from a notebook and if have stuck the options button use baby oil ,:) yep that first ds4 :)

I think it would be great to have a better battery and of course it sounds like better blue tooth would also be welcome.

I do have multiple controllers and anyone considering to play for more than 3-4 hours in a session should be default buy a second controller. Yes I know thats more cost, but seriously never had a problem with just unplugging one and plugging in another. Simple.

Very interesting... Have previous generation Dual Shocks ever received such updates?

SixaxiS --> DS3?

I'm just hoping for one with a battery that lasts more than 5 hours, though.

I actually like when one of my DS4's runs down and it's time to switch to a fully charged one. That nice cool sweat free controller feels invigorating.

Could you post a link for the battery you bought?
