Forums - Gaming Discussion - t. shovelware presents: the other games

so, this thread is all about the cool games. that's right, just the cool ones.

rules:

1. the games must have come out before the year 2000. arcade games count too.
2. no major players:
ie: no mario, sonic, link/zelda, halo, jax and daxter, final fantasy, pac man, etc.
3. the games must be sweet.

so, here we go:

1. blaster master (nes): the story of a kid who finds a power suit and a tank and goes under ground to find his pet frog that turned into a giant crazy ass frog. i know the plot was different in japan but this is what we got in the US. bad ass.

2. spider (ps1): you're a spider that kills the shit out of other insects. you got guns. 2.5d. frustrating but fun all the same.

3. intelligent cube (ps1): the most hardcore game ever created. it was tough as nails and made you feel like an idiot if you lost. really fun in short bursts, a real challenge.

4. space station silicon valley (n64): 2 robots crash into earth or something like that. your a computer chip that can control animals in order to.... complete tasks? one sweet game.

5. hydro thunder (arcade): no console version (including the dreamcast) ever did this game justice. one of the best arcade style racers ever.

6. alien vs preditor (arcade): when people think arcade beat-em-ups, they tend to think 'x-men,' 'the simpsons,' or 'turtles in time.' this game came shortly after those three and it was freakin cool.

7. x-men vs street fighter (arcade): this entry breaks the rules a little but whatever. 8 members of the street fighter faithful vs 8 x-men. one as the best cross over games ever made. marvel vs. capcom 2 would outshine it in the long run, but original is still a blast.

8. guardian heroes (saturn): while parts of this game haven't withstood the test of time (hello slow down!), the core gameplay holds up well. multiplayer 2.5d action rpg that takes place across 3 plains. a huge game with a ton of replay value.

9. crusin exotica (arcade): the crusin games really struggled in terms of quality on the n64. the last proper entry into the series, exotica offered the most exciting visuals out of any entry.

10. pilotwings 64 (n64): fly that helicopter through those rings! 6 different events, 18 different stages. everyone knows this one. it's a gem.

11. tetrisphere (n64): i have no idea what's going on most of the time in this game. one of the best soundtracks ever.

12. river city ransom (nes): a beat-em-up when traces of rpg elements. another gem.

there's a good number from me.

-edit-

bonus games:

A. you don't know jack (ps1): a hilarious triva based party game. light on the visuals but tons of vo and 3 player action.

B. wwf wrestlefest (arcade): i was a wrestling fan for over a decade (late 80s-02ish) and was presented with dozens of games over that time period. wrestlefest was released exclusively for the arcade in 91' and featured 12 wrestlers (10 selectable). the follow-up to wwf superstars (89'), it came with tighter gameplay and some really slick graphics.

C. air zonk (turbo grax 16): as a kid I knew a total of one person who owned a turbo grax 16. the only game I could remember playing on it was air zonk. 15 years later I was able to download it on the virtual console ($6) and pass on the word that it holds up very well. one of the better cute-em-ups ever made.

D. super punch out (snes): normally I wouldn't feel the need to post this game, but with it's release on the virtual console days away, I gotta push that retro hype train. I'm sticking by my guns and saying that this is not only better then the original punch out, but it's one of my top 20 favorite games ever. makes sense that punch out wii has far more in common with spo then its nes predecessor.

-end edit-

now, your turn.

Wonder Project J (Snes) - what if Pinocchio was a robot?

Wonder Project J 2 (N64) - what if we made an amazing sequel to an amazing game and no one bought it?

Fire Emblem Thracia 776 (Snes) - With a cool name like this it is shame no one ever played the game. It came out in a Japan only release in 1999. That is right a Snes game came out in 1999. The game was very good and had some of the best Snes graphics.

I never heard of any of those titles.

Base Wars (NES):

What if baseball players could be upgraded so that they play better?

You say, "Wait, how is this different from steroids in real baseball?"

Well, some of these upgrades are weapons which the robotic players use in gladiatorial combat to decide the outcome of every encounter on the field. Completely destroy three of the other team's robots and the forfeit the game. Kickass.

Einhander (PS1):

From the days when creative people still worked at Square, Einhander is possibly the finest scrolling shooter ever made. Unlockable weapons, secret ships, cool levels and badass bosses.

The Earth and the Moon are at war, and you pilot one of the Moon's last elite fighter craft. You cut a swath of devastation across Earth, eventually battling a great missile that Earth has launched at the Moon. When you finally shoot it down, the Moon thanks you for providing crucial battle programming for their new fleet of unmanned E.O.S. fighter craft. Killing you is to be the final test for these craft. Time for you to disarm the other side.

Bushido Blade 1 and 2 (PS1):

Another old gem from Square, this one's a fighting game with no damage bar. A successful hit will either cripple or it will kill. Don't expect fireballs or physics-defying leap attacks, either, though a well-timed thrown weapon can cripple your foe so they have a hard time avoiding the killing stroke of your blade.

"The worst part about these reviews is they are [subjective]--and their scores often depend on how drunk you got the media at a Street Fighter event."  — Mona Hamilton, Capcom Senior VP of Marketing

BB 1 is one of my favourite games ever. Still waiting for the real Bushido Blade 3. No luck there.
