Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The Golden Bolt Reviews: Super Mario Bros. 2 USA

Tagged games:

Hey everybody, I'm back again with another review video!  Continuing my NES Mario Marathon, I moved right along to Super Mario Bros. 2, USA.  As I'm sure you guys all know, it's always been called the black sheep of the Mario franchise.  But who says being a black sheep is a bad thing?

If you guys are only partially familiar with Mario USA, you'll know that it was first released in Japan as Doki Doki Panic.  But do you know what Doki Doki Panic was?  Or did you know that even Doki Doki Panic actually started as a Mario game?  I tell the full story in the video, so be sure to check it out!

Good stuff! Thanks for sharing!

This reminds me of a funny anecdote. Irrate Gamer made a review of SMB2 USA and told the story of its development in a way that suggested that Nintendo straight up stole another company's game and reskinned it to sell it as their own, and a few people on VGC actually believed it and condemned Nintendo for it.

Wow, really?  When was this?

And here I thought the Doki Doki Panic part of the story was common knowledge!  Go figure.

Like five years ago.

Apparently my response didn't post, I guess? My bad.

That's somewhat understandable for 5 years ago. Not entirely but at least somewhat. I think around 2009 was when it started becoming common knowledge though, but that might just be my memory of it.
