Just as Nintendo is challenging the conventions of The Legend of Zelda with Breath of the Wild, the company is similarly looking to shake up what players have come to expect with Mario.

"We're always challenging ourselves to create something new, so hopefully you'll see a new kind of Mario in about a year or two," Shigeru Miyamoto said in an interview with IGN.

"Maybe next E3 we'll be able to share something."

Miyamoto explained that the challenges Nintendo faces in tweaking the Mario formula are unique from those dealt with in producing Breath of the Wild because of how wide an audience Mario games reach.

"It's kind of difficult with Mario because some of the more important conventions of Mario are based on the approachability and accessibility of those games," Miyamoto said, noting that having new people join Nintendo has allowed them to look "at the conventions with fresh eyes."

Maybe next E3?....c´mon, by the time the NX launches, it´ll have been around 3.5 years since Mario 3D World.

I'm certainly looking forward to a new Mario. What if they made the new Mario game in anime form or something else entirely? We all know Nintendo has an eye for gorgeous artistic games.

I reckon mario will turn into mario gta (but without the violence lol)

You can do missions, play golf, tennis etc lol.

but then again they wouldnt be able to milk the franchise with mario golf tennis soccer etc..

I won't be surprised if it's a launch title for NX or releases a few months after launch. Nintendo can't take any chances with not having a shit ton of games at launch and the months after or else there will be a drought like the Wii U had.

edit: I just realized after posting this that he said it might be shown at next E3 which would be in June, and the NX is launching in March so it couldn't possibly be a launch title. I'm a dumb fuck. 

No more silly spinoffs! We've only had 3 major Mario games in the last 25 years! Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy 1, and 2 is it!
Give us Super Mario Galaxy 3.

I hope so for the sake of New Super Mario Bros. For 3D, many people are still wishing for the return of 64 or Galaxy so it would be interesting how they will make it new and be universally accepted as a true 3D Mario unlike 3D World which was still great.

I'm guessing the next 3D Mario game is going to be the NX's big holiday title for 2017.  I kind of hoped that it would be a launch window title but after looking at BotW, I'm convinced that it can carry the NX for its launch window alongside some support titles like Pikmin 4.

But I like the way Mario is right now
