Forums - Gaming Discussion - Ubisoft: We believe the NX will recapture the Wii's audiance

Ubisoft is confident that the Nintendo NX will recapture the lost Wii audience, Ubisoft has told MCV.

The Wii was one of the most successful games consoles in history, with over 101m consoles sold. By comparison its successor, Wii U, has been a failure, shifting just shy of 13m units.

Ubisoft is the first Western third-party publisher to pledge support to the NX by announcing a Just Dance title for the platform. The announcement was made on stage during Ubisoft’s E3 press conference and EMEA boss Alain Corre told MCV that the firm is working closely with Nintendo on the project.

“We have always appreciated the relationship with Nintendo, the co-creation and the fact that they are really concentrating on quality - they have fantastic brands,” he told MCV at Ubisoft's E3 booth in Los Angeles.

And they are addressing the family market in a very different way, their own way, which we appreciate. We have done a lot of products and successes with Nintendo in the past, and we believe that the NX will recapture a lot the lapsed Wii players. So we will see when they release it, but we are confident.”

Nintendo is showing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wind at E3, but the game on display is the Wii U version, and not the NX edition which is set to launch at the same time.

This better be a joke. It's gotta be a fucking joke. I'm going to be so pissed off if this is true.

So you're pissed because Nintendo is trying to deliver something to their most important customers?

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

So you're angry because Nintendo want to sell thei console to gamers and families? Because...let me guess.....it's not cool if anyone who doesn't dwell in their mothers basement enjoys it.

Haven't you heard? Nobody who's not a male aged from 14 to 40 is allowed to enjoy video games.

I just don't see it. In 2004, there was a large untapped market of non-gamers that no one was making games for. Certainly there was no centralized, user-friendly place for a gamer like that to go to.

Today casual smartphone games have larger marketing budgets than even the biggest PS4/XB1 games and even casuals spend several hours a week already playing video games.

"Download for Free At The App Store" is now the biggest marketing slogan in the game business by a country mile.

Life before the iPhone/iPad/Android and Facebook was very, very different.

Today there are more casual games being made than "core" games and they are like 60% of the revenue of the industry.

That is exactly how I feel. I think Nintendo would shoot themselves in the foot if they did this. Competing with Sony and Microsoft seems to be the best way to go. They need to make some deals with 3rd parties and offer the best 1st parties they can. Zelda: Breath of the Wild looks phenomenal and that game will likely send NX's off the selves alone. Sure, it's available on the Wii U. Why buy that over a new system? I think the line up we saw today is a good indication for the game. Was there actually anything bad said about the game from the people who played it?

They didnt say they believed they would recapture it, they said "some" of it.
And yep they did say "they are addressing the family market".

Nintendo has always been the most kid friendly console out there.

The elderly and soccer moms? Please don't.

Not necessarily, when the Gamecube came out, my younger siblings had one, but they definitely got much more use out of the PS2.

While Gamecube DID market nearly exclusively to kids, there was definitely a lot more on PS2 for children to enjoy; for starters, the PS2 had DVD playback, so kids got to enjoy their first DVD player with their console. Second, there were better games, such as Katamari, Guitar Hero, Singstar, and Okami. Just because the PS2 had the additional benefit that it marketed strongly to other demographics as well, doesn't mean it wasn't better than the GameCube for kids too.

I think Nintendo went a little too far with the handle so little kids could carry around their Gamecube everywhere like a lunch box, or the big green button, or the giant L & R triggers with the toy-like springy noises included. I know that even my younger siblings were a little embarassed to have the "kiddy console" during the GameCube era. So I don't think most kids liked the GameCube better than PS2 either.
