I think you'll find it's Sony who are re-inventing the console cycle and MS who are having to do the same at a later date.

Kind of this.

But MS did speak on it publicly before the PS4k Rumours started...

I hope for Microsoft sake that this is them getting rid of the console cycle and this is more or less their "next gen" system which will slowly start to get its on exclusives and be forward compatible with whatever they release in the 2020s.

For sony at least it definitely appears from the rumours like Neo is just a mid-gen upgraded SKU ala N3DS. Nothing intending to replace thePS4.

For mid gen cycles or shorter gen cycles to work there must be complete forward and BC. And everything MS is doing with UWP shows that they are already very well invested in that concept.

As for new consoles and/or slightly upgraded skus, call it what you want but i think they are both going to be even more similar this time around than they were when the PS4/XB1 first launched. They are getting their chips from the same place after all and they know more about what eachother is doimg than we would ever know.

On another note, an intersting thing that occured to me is that if they are both using polaris, we are all here talking about the 36CU variant of the chip, they could also put in similarly specced variant of the chip to what is already in the consoles now, so a 14/16/18CU variant of it clocked higher and put in a smaller box and sell that as their slim consoles while having the higher end chips be their premium consoles.

First off, i don't understand how this is something MS is doing. Especially being that we dont know when the darn consoles are coming out.

Secondly, not only do i believe both MS and Sony are going to come next year i also feel its a perfect time for a refresh.

Lastly, i feel they are both trying to adopt an iterative 3-4yr gen cycle going forward and we will see total forward and backward compatibility across generations. We can't call them shorter gens since the previous consoles will still be able to play all the new games. I really dont see what is disruptive about this approach, if anything I'm more surprised it took them this long to do it.

I've always found the concept of spending years accumulating 10s of millions of subscribers only to hit the reset button every 5-7yrs and do it all again as an extremely stupid but at the time necessary facet of the console business. Fortunately, games are such that they are now more about scalability instead of generational limitations. I mean lets not kid ourselves, I'm sure they could hsve gotten the withcer 3/fall out 4/uncharted 4 to run on the 360/PS3 if they needed to. It would look like shit, but its not impossible.

I dunno why Sony would do this too. The current system works well for them obviously and you'd be out of your mind if you think there won't be a true PS5 in 3-4 years time starting over again, because it will have its own exclusive games, which doesn't rule out PS4 games being playable on it.

The numbering behind Playstation is their most powerful marketing tool and they're not gonna start naming their console PS Orbis or Neo like Android OS titles.

What I foresee for Scorpio is that it initially starts as an upgraded Xbone but eventually grows to the next Xbox when MS sanctions exclusive games for it. I dont see that happening with PS4 Neo, just 2x PS4 gpu is too small a upgrade, and you still have the same amount of ram with a bit better cpu. I think Scorpio will have 16GB ram.

Its more likely than not the scorpio is the Xbox's 9th gen equivilent. If the Scorpio is running at 6 TFLOPs, that's roughly equivilent to a GTX 980ti, which is more than capable of 4k games.

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

I don't think it's is arriving to late as Microsoft will likely have plans to get rid of the "One" tag as it's reception was horrible from the moment it was revealed at E3 and launch a new Xbox platform in 2017 and by then the Windows 10 store will be a full blown platform itself liking PC/console and receiving all MS first party along with third parties similar to a steam/gog and playing all Xbox One titles as well giving it a good day one library.

I expect 4 year gens. Consoles will continue to use X86 architecture and thus most (if not all) games will be backwards compatible for at least the next 4 years.

I mostly play RTS and Moba style games now adays as well as ALOT of benchmarking. I do play other games however such as the witcher 3 and Crysis 3, and recently Ashes of the Singularity. I love gaming on the cutting edge and refuse to accept any compromises. Proud member of the Glorious PC Gaming Master Race. Long Live SHIO!!!!

From the sounds of it they are trying to turn the Xbox into an expensive iPod type device that plays games. So they are not totally bowing out of the console business they are just marginalizing it a bit while they put a greater emphasis on PC.

By the goddess, We cannot wait 2-3 weeks until we have more information about this ?.

The problem with this line of thinking is that eventually a gen leap is going to be needed and(lets say) the PS4 wont be able to play games in the PS5.Why?Because the power difference betwenn hardwares are going to be too big.Even in PCs, where you have more options about the games performance, you still need a PC that has X requirements to run a game on the lowest setting. There is a difference in making compromises to make the game run on older systems and being actually impossible to port since making these compromises would essentially make that game into another game(lower number of enemies, lower effects, bad graphics, you get the idea.).So this idea of itineration, in the sense that if you get a console now it will last 15 years, is simply ridiculous.Eventually you will need to upgrade. The same happens to the smartphone market after all.

And I mean, if we have already problems with developers making broken games on current consoles, imagine when they have to make 2 ports, one with better specs and the other with worse specs, and try to imagine whats going to happen.I mean, we actually have proof.Just look at Black Ops 3 current gen and last gen.And the argument that " as long as the install base in the older hardware is big enough, they will make a good port" is simply wrong, again with Black Ops 3, since last gen had way bigger install base than the current one.Dont fool yourselfs:Sony may have said that they will control qulity and all, and that may very well happen for the first year or so, but what if the Neo or scorpio starts selling really well?Do you really think that Sony or the other third party developers will care that much about complains, when they will be selling more than enough on the latest itinerations?

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Man, the 8th-9th generation are a mess. If they needed that much power, why did they made the XBone and the PS4 like they did, and when they did? I can't believe this is just to acomodate VR, and the "upgrade every three years" bussiness model is yet another burden for the consumer.

You know it deserves the GOTY.
