Forums - Gaming Discussion - What happened to the Horror genre???

Fog. Corridors. dark enviroments. Small rooms..... back in the time of the PS1 and PS2 these may have been tricks used to eek out performance from weak hardware. But they resulted in some of the best horror and atmospheric games ever. One would have thought that with these way more powerful consoles horror would have been a genre rediscovered..... but nooooooooo, we are getting action flick after action flick.

RE1, RE2, RE4, Silent hill 1&2, Fatal Frame, Parasite eve, even dino crisis all managed to capture an atmosphere that at leat kept you on edge eveey second you played the game. That just somehow all got lost.

I remeber fatal frame (at least one of them) left me with so much drrad that i jusy snapoed and didnt bother to keeo playing. Like fuck that, not gonna put myself through this torture..... the few days i played the game i actualky felt depressed and like there was some kimda weight on my shoulders.

Who else here wishes we can get some really decent, slow paced horror games again? I mean come on, in the whole of silent hill 1&2 we probabky didnt hsve to kill more than 25 enemies. Belive it or not.... but that was enough to leave anyone scared shitless.

They definitely exist...they're just all indie games with a few niche Japanese stragglers here and there.

I've played tons of fantastic ones in the past 5 years or so.

Fatal frame was terrifying. The evil within is pretty legit except one idiotic part with a zombie and a hummer.

Blame Konami.

There are? maybe i should delve deeper into the indie sceene.....

But i need the big budget horror games. RE lost me when it became more about machine guns, rocket launchers and a convoluted story that till tomorrow makes no sense whatsoever. Once it used to be just about surviving the night or getting outta the city.

Silent hill.... fuck it i dont even know what happened to that game.... i just remeber asking myself in one of them why the hell was i holding a sumarai sword?

Alien Isolation,The Evil Within,Fatal Frame and Outlast. Good Horror games are still being made.

Blame FNAF for the most cancerous fandom for any horror game(or indie title in general).

Besides that, I guess they just like JRPG's from seventh gen. hopefully a comeback will be made

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

The Park, Outlast + Whistleblower DLC, Alien Isolation.

+ lots of few short games :) It's not dead but we're far from the 2000's era

Yh loved alien isolation. Even dead space 1 now that i think of it.

Became action, cause people don't wanna be scared, don't wanna have to hide, they just want to go through the corridors and kill characters skined as zombies and stuff

The Bitch is back! And better then ever! #BritneyReturns

SONY Bring them BACK for PS4 and VITA!

RE4 is not scary at all

I dunno, the last decent horror game I played was Dead Space. Some people say Alien Isolation is good, but haven't played it yet.
