Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Are we one year removed from a small horde of new Nintendo titles?

How many unannounced titles are coming in the next year with the Nx launch?

A lot 13 13.98%

A good number of games 27 29.03%

a few new games, a few ports 26 27.96%

port-heavy launch with a couple new titles 11 11.83%

few unexpected titles at all 7 7.53%

The Nx is really just a ... 9 9.68%

Total:93

Part of this is certainly wishful thinking, but I feel it is not an unreasonable question given the following facts:

-Nintendo's development of titles for the Wii U seems to have begun drying up a few years ago, with the few games released over the past year or so being delayed, long-term projects with very few exceptions

-Nintendo's explanation for launching the Nx after the holiday season is that they're prioritizing a strong launch library over holiday sales

-The only game we know will be on the Nx as of right now is a game that was originally designed for the Wii U (Zelda)

While I may be succumbing to optimism a bit, Nintendo's behavior over the last few years suggests (to me) a shifting of resources away from maintaining the Wii U towards developing for the Nx a bit earlier than expected. Couple this with the fact that we haven't heard of a single Nx exclusive and yet Nintendo claims to be focusing on providing a decent launch lineup (which I believe a delay beyond the crucial holiday season may validate to some extent), and it seems to me that there pretty much has to be a good number of games we've not even heard of yet that could be released in under a year.

This strikes me as unusual, as generally with this little time before a console launch we'd not only know more information about the console itself (they've already said we won't learn anything in E3), but they'd begin promoting a lineup for it. E3 seems like the perfect timing to do that, and yet they plan to burn right past that date and leave us in the dark for even longer.

To me, this could mean one of a few things:

-The Nx could wind up seeing further delays

-The lineup may not be very impressive or be port-heavy (the pesimist in me)

-They don't want to show off the goods too early and see interest wane by the time the holiday season ends

Regardless, given the claimed focus on the library, the apparent resource shift away from the Wii U quite a while ago, and the delay beyond the holiday season to accomodate their library, I'm somewhat hopeful that they're about to really surprise us with a number of unexpected titles, perhaps waiting until late in the year to do so.

What do you think? Anyone want to guess at a long-shot appearance in the library?

Well, there will be ports, at the very least three or four (Zelda U, Mario Maker, Smash U and Xenoblade X). Aside from that, I really want Nintendo to prove they can have a year without software droughts, at the very least a big title per month between 1st and 3rd party. They need to show they can avoid the WiiU droughts at all costs, or else this would be a catastrophe. Merging the handheld and home console lineups should do the trick. I don't think the NX will be delayed, they can't live with just 3DS-amiibo sales forever.

At the very least, I hope Nintendo don't find themselves in another "not prepared for HD developement" situation.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Didn't we already go through this with expectations for the Wii U? That since the Wii was abandoned, the Wii U would have an absolute smorgasbord of titles in the early years?

Yeah, like I said I really think (and they'd never admit this) that part of what made the Wii U droughts even worse than they might have been was a shifting of resources away from a failing system towards their next one.

Personally, I really hope there's ports, and the four you mentioned are the perfect candidates. Especially in regard to Smash... that game is excellent and dear lord let Sakurai take a cat nap before forcing him onto the next iteration.

I'll never put it past Nintendo to be caught off guard by common technological advancement though. Hopefully they've caught on this time around.

I believe Nintendo is entering this console with a very different demeanor than the one they had trotting out the Wii U. At the very least, they're citing lessons learned from the Wii U launch... hopefully that lesson wasn't "the system needs TWO gamepads".

I kind of think you're right but I don't think the result is going to be more AAA type games.  I think quantity is going to increase but mostly in the area of games that you might see in web browers, on handhelds, or on smartphones.  Now, because it's Nintendo, I don't think it's going to be like Flappy Bird level, but it's going to be more like Monster Strike than Mario Galaxy.  That's what the Japanese market wants.

A XBX port? There's at least 5 Wii U games that would sell more.

They pretty much have to a good number of games, otherwise it would mean they've only been sitting around twiddling their thumbs for years. We're due for another 3D Mario, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, and we know Pikmin 4 is coming while Retro's been working on something.

Well, someone doesn't know how to see the different between the two scenarios. Now nintendo isn't new to HD development and having the same architeture on the wii u and 3ds successors will speed up development even more.
